The Hidden Struggle of ADHD Business Owners: It's Not What You Think
Quick bit of 'housekeeping' - this episode includes a free worksheet - https://weeniecast.com/rule-worksheet-click-hereNow that's sorted...I'm gonna tell you something surprising about ADHD business owners—it's not what you think. Hi, I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and money mindset coach, and welcome to The Weeniecast. This topic might hit home for you: the rule of thirds, and why being bad at stuff is something we, ADHD business owners, are notoriously terrible at. And it's a much bigger deal than you might realize. So stick around, because I'm going to break this down and give you practical advice on how to tackle this head-on, transforming your business along the way.Let me give you a little teaser of what's in store. First off, we'll explore why ADHD folks tend to give up at the first sign of failure. Trust me, it comes from a deeper place than just a lack of patience. We'll also talk about how our brains are wired to only hyperfocus on things we're naturally interested in, which makes us super talented right off the bat in those areas. But here's the kicker - when it comes to running a business, there's a mountain of skills you need that you probably don't have that natural inclination for and that can throw you for a loop. From copywriting to sales to accounting, these aren't exactly your dopamine-packed playgrounds, right? But don't worry, there's hope. TakeawaysWhat ADHD business owners often struggle with that leads to frustration. What is the 'rule of thirds'? Why you need to consider hiring help. Impact on neurodivergent individuals. How to build resilience for personal and business growth with ADHD. How to avoid the pitfalls many business owners face. Small Business Coaching Choices: Avoiding Red Flags and Finding True ExpertiseI might be considering dropping the term "coach" from my title… and it’s not because I don’t love what I do, but because the term "coach" has gotten so confusing that it’s lost a lot of its original meaning. We’ll be exploring what traditional coaching entails, where the coach asks open-ended questions and doesn’t give direct advice, versus a more hands-on approach—which is more my style—where advice and expertise are freely shared. One thing we’ll cover is the importance of finding the right fit for your business phase. Are you looking for a classical coach, someone who's going to draw out your ideas and have you come to your own conclusions, or are you more in need of a mentor who provides guidance and shares their experiences? You’ll also learn some red flags to look out for when seeking coaching or consulting services—like relying on social media followers as proof of skills or boasting of 'secret formulas' that promise quick fixes.Let’s unpack all of this. You’ll come away with better discernment skills to find the coaching or consulting partnership that’s truly aligned with your business needs. By the end of this episode, you'll be more confident in spotting genuine coaches versus those who’re just pretending to know what they’re talking about, and you'll know what to look for to get the most out of your working relationship.Click play, and let's get started!Timestamped Summary:00:00 Traditional coaching emphasizes asking open-ended questions.05:38 Consider coach certification, clarity, and commitment.09:00 Find a coach with customized expertise, beware charlatans.10:06 Spot social media fraud by authentic comments.14:26 Red flags include lack of last name.18:28 Rejecting hustle culture, finding work-life balance.21:02 Trust intuition, solid testimonials, similar experiences validate.25:24 Find supportive, flexible, and enjoyable professionals.27:23 Fun teaching made verb conjugation unforgettable.Useful linksMy discounted link for you to learn a new language to give you practice at failing!:https://weeniecast.com/lingodaConfused? What's the beaver 'damming' up YOUR business?

What's the beaver 'damming' up YOUR business?
What do we business owners share in common with beavers? You're gonna kick yourself!Hey, I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and money mindset coach, and this is my podcast "The Weeniecast!" Pssssst! Not sure if you've heard, but I'm inviting new members to the best community for business owners with ADHD - the Hyperfocused Community! You can join here - https://weeniecast.com/hyperfocusNow, back to this episode...How do you beaver up your business?I was scrolling through my social media feed the other day when I stumbled upon the most peculiar video: a beaver diligently collecting household items to create a dam inside someone's bathtub. It struck me how instinctual it is for these creatures to obstruct the natural flow of water—and then I realized, isn't that what we often do in our own businesses? I’ve now coined the term: "beavering your business as a result of this lesson I've learned." Often, ADHD entrepreneurs unconsciously create energy blocks that prevent success, clients, and money from flowing naturally. How do we create dams in our own success? It's all about the stories we tell ourselves—stories about our ADHD, our relationship with money, or our skill sets. Instead of treating these as minor hurdles to overcome, we magnify them into insurmountable obstacles. For instance, constantly blaming ADHD for our challenges not only limits our actions but also keeps us in a perpetual state of powerlessness. We even use our "bad relationship with money" as a convenient excuse to avoid asking for the compensation we deserve. By acknowledging and tackling these stories head-on, you’ll learn how to redirect that blocking energy into something more constructive. After listening to this episode, you'll gain valuable insights into recognizing and dismantling the barriers you've been unknowingly placing in your own path. We’ll cover practical strategies for transforming your mindset around ADHD and money, empowering you to step into a position of control and opportunity. You'll be better at identifying the sabotaging narratives you tell yourself, and more equipped to make decisions from a place of strength rather than weakness. Whether it's overcoming your fear of failure, rejection, or just breaking a long-held belief that you “can't” succeed because of your ADHD, this episode will arm you with the tools to stop being a weenie and start running a successful, profitable business.Timestamped Summary:00:00 - Introduction: How beavers and business blocks are connected.01:50 - The concept of "beavering your business" and the negative impact of energetic blocks.02:49 - Common self-imposed barriers ADHD entrepreneurs create, stemming from blaming ADHD.03:49 - The power of shifting away from blaming ADHD to taking control.04:54 - Specifics on how untreated ADHD symptoms can impact business tasks.06:06 - Discussing the myth of insurmountable obstacles, especially around money.07:09 - Steps to improve relationship with money and move past paralyzing beliefs.08:54 - Overcoming my "I'm bad at writing dialogue" block.10:10 - Breaking down the psychological mechanisms behind magnifying obstacles.12:34 - Empowering yourself to overcome the beavers in your business. This episode is your guide to stop letting beavers dam up your path to success. Understanding the impact of your money archetypes

Understanding the impact of your money archetypes
In this bonus episode my producer Neal (now a client) and I delved into some incredibly insightful discussions about how our personal money archetypes influence our financial perspectives and behaviors. It's always revealing to see how character traits impact not just our business decisions but our overall mental state.Neal's journey highlighted a combination of traits that you may well find relatable. We touched on the tendency of some to over-give, stemming from a deep psychological need to derive self-worth from helping others. This behavior, while noble, can sometimes wreak havoc on business and personal relationships. We also explored the tension between saving rigorously and indulging in life's pleasures—a common conflict for many. Our talk emphasized the importance of unpacking these behaviors, recognizing their origins, and seeking a balance that aligns with our broader life goals.Lastly, Neal and I dove deep into some ways to manage these complex archetypes. We discussed setting boundaries, pricing adjustments, and being mindful about how time is allocated to ensure that giving doesn’t become self-sacrificial.I also offered Neal some tactile steps and recommendations on how to manage his specific traits. This episode serves as a reminder that understanding one's own archetype can lead to profound positive changes in both business strategies and personal life quality. If you find this conversation insightful, and you'd like to book in for your own session with me, you can do so at weeniecast.com/strategycallTimestamped Summary:00:00 Intro and needing hobbies.09:13 Wanting to give Dad a car as a gift.12:03 Balancing generosity and self-preservation in business.13:40 Frequent, time-consuming situation with unclear returns.17:23 Accumulating saves, but experiences are valuable investments.21:45 Romantic and accumulator struggle with money joy.24:47 Appearance doesn't matter, client service does.26:04 Katie's Homework.Your next steps after listening Realizing it's time to work with me?
