This is Part 1 of 3 in a series discussing the Definition of Artificial Intelligence. In this first part we highlight the challenges that prevent us not having a universally accepted standard definition of AI. We need to acknowledge that the journey to advanced AI is actually a Continuum of Intelligence (the title of my soon to be published Book), and that mapping the journey may be more beneficial than having a status definition. I introduce an alternative to a single definition that might become more useful, the Index of Intelligence that will help us map both the capabilities and capacity of AI agents. Part 2 will discuss in much more detail the Index of Intelligence, and Part 3 will discuss other fundamental capabilities of intelligence, including the misunderstanding and potential role of consciousness in delivering advanced AI solutions.
