#25 with Andy Bull - 'The prize for making music is you made music and you get to do it again', finding the essence of your art and accepting life is kind of pointless gives you freedom to truly be who you want to be
Welcome to episode 25 of The Ebbs and The Flows with musician and creative Andy Bull who is currently writing an album in sixty days. This is a long form podcast because I just really enjoyed every last minute of this conversation. I know it’s not popular as we talk ourselves out of ‘the rambling man screaming into the wind’ length of anything these days – but I just found myself in the fortunate situation of talking to one of my favourite artists in a really candid, authentic and warm discussion about the creative process, doing your homework so you can enjoy the sweeter parts of your vocation, looking at how many brilliant people you will encounter, rather than the asshole in the stands, Andy’s favourite song he has written and the song he wished he had written and a bit about family, his love for his late father and a waffling contest between two wafflers. A glorious chinwag and one for the ages. This is the Ebbs and The Flows: Lean in for soft chats about hard stuff. Check out Andy Bull's instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/andy_bull/For Andy's Weird Fishes, head to 1.15 into the pod. #24 Mia Dyson on 'The Tender Heart', panic, living through life and death and the healing utility of love and meditation
On the 24th episode of The Ebbs and the Flows and our first recorded remotely, Mia Dyson, multi-nominated ARIA artist, acclaimed musician and writer of the rugged and the radiant joins us to discuss her new album 'Tender Heart', how she faced panic and her deepest fears, her cataclysmic brush with the gap between life and death and her tender perspective on love, meditation and the study of the meaning of life and death. This is a most tender and gentle conversation. Welcome to The Ebbs and The Flows, soft chats about hard stuff. As a precursor, Mia Dyson's heart stopped due to Long QT Syndrome, a heart rhythm disorder which sent her organ into arrhythmia triggered by the earthquake. Nine in 10 people die from their first episode because it is generally undiagnosed until the patient suffers an attack. A truly mesmerising story, and one that solidified her strong and everlasting love to her husband Carl, this is where our conversation starts - where it goes is poetry and jazz. We cover the 90 second nugget, the Art of The List, The Power and The Process focusing on Mia's new album and the most pivotal parts of her life's journey, Me and The World on a Page and of course, Weird Fishes. Strap yourself in for a rollicking ride, remotely!Quick note: This was recorded with William (Ebbs) in Adelaide and Mia in Los Angeles via Riverside. The audio is clear, however not quite what it would be in a studio. Check out Mia's new album here: The Ebbs and the Flows is an emotional health movement focused on openness and transparency about the light and the shade of the lives we led and journeys we encounter. #23 Shane McCurry on the value of leadership, culture and living and breathing your values, loving the rollicking, sometimes rickety ride of life and his love of storytelling
“I would rather be ashes than dust!I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot.I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The function of man is to live, not to exist.I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them.I shall use my time.” Shane McCurry is the guest on the 23rd (!!!!) episode of The Ebbs and The Flows, and what a timely guest he is indeed. Shane McCurry is a leading leadership coach and culture consultant who has worked with sporting clubs, in particular Richmond Tigers in the AFL and South Sydney Rabbitohs in the NRL, and across corporate and government workplaces, including the Australian Army. His passion for his vocation and his lust for life and all the challenges, moments and learnings is infectious. This conversation is a reflection of a person who understands giving back is as important as taking in - welcome to EBBS, Shane McCurry! In this episode, we discuss teamwork, the moments he will never, ever forget, why he carries round a photo in his wallet and why the format of his note to self is typed up. This is a conversation that made me feel really connected to this person, this man, but also really connected to life, and how in an instant you can make someone's day better, or how the dinner you had with your mates might never happen in the same way. Shane's sense of self is a tremendous thing to behold, but so to is his gift of listening and his deep love and passion for storytelling. I loved being part of this episode, and I hope you love listening to it. The Ebbs community, I present to you, Shane McCurry.  The Ebbs and the Flows is an emotional health movement focused on openness and transparency about the light and the shade of the lives we led and journeys we encounter. Remote Community Musings PT. II - Delving into Despair - Iron Claw, Wrasslin', letting the thing you love kill you and finding meaning in the 'sad and bad stuff'
Welcome back to The Ebbs and The Flows, Soft chats about Hard stuff. Today is our second edition of Remote Community Musings and we chat about despair. Why does despair send shivers down our spine? We look at the state of despair in the context of the recently released film 'The Iron Claw' which is a biopic based on the Von Erich family - a wrestling family out of Texas, who were struck by so many cruel blows they were deemed to be 'cursed'. Spoilers galore so be careful if you want to see the film soon. I am a lapsed wrestling fan who has come back around since COVID and the whole artform intrigues me more than ever, but there is no intrigue that is deeper than the dark cloud of despair that hangs over the industry. But why are we so afraid of despair when it teaches us so much about humanity and life? I use Soren Kierkgaard's work to get my head around this tricky and dark topic. Well, come along as I muse about 'the sad and bad stuff' on this episode.Couple of quick notes - I speak about these two ads - https://www.therock.net.nz/home/rock-news/2023/10/watch-english-football-teams-viral-ad-for-mens-mental-health-will-absolutely-crush-you.html The other I have not been able to track but I will source and post it soon enough.  The Ebbs and the Flows is an emotional health movement focused on openness and transparency about the light and the shade of the lives we led and journeys we encounter. EBBS with Stephanie Williams on culture, grief, the healing nature of community and how love and hope is the only way
The remarkable Stephanie Williams joins us for this special episode of The Ebbs and The Flows. Stephanie is a woman on the move. AFLW player, artist, young leader and compassionate, resilient and big hearted - and just 21 years old. We chat footy, culture, grief, hope and love on this spellbinding episode. Stephanie is a Larrakia woman from the top end who moved down south for school and sport at the tender age of 11 - her journey from here is something to behold. This episode is about homecomings, grief, setbacks, mental health struggles but also a celebration of culture, country, education, wellbeing and the ultimate notion of hope and love. Her 'Note to Self' is beaming with pride and passion for the person she is becoming, whilst simultaneously harbouring immense grief following the loss of her beloved sister. So many takeaways and learnings from this beautiful conversation with a beautiful person. As per usual,  features 'The 90 second nugget', 'Me and the World on a Page', 'A Note to Self' and of course, 'Weird Fishes'. S2 E6: EBBS with Carter O'Regan on gender identity, dysphoria and trauma, how inclusion is far more than just the changeroom and how finding your true self will let your spirit soar
Carter O'Regan is our first guest on The Ebbs and The Flows for 2024. Carter is a fiancé, a footballer, a nurse and a creative soul. He also happens to be a trans advocate who affirmed his gender over the course of several years. I met Carter several years ago at Kew Football Club and have heard him speak as part of Pride Round, and while also acknowledging the excellent chats we always had at the football club, I have learnt a lot about the importance of gender affirmation and why inclusion and acceptance is so important. This conversation captures the priorities now in Carter's life. He is a nurse who loves his job and loves being around people, with his caring and empathetic nature shining through, however it is in his 'Note to Self', when you will hear the intimate impact a life event that occurred when he was 28 has had on him and the rest of his life.  An episode focusing on gender identity, dysphoria and trauma, how inclusion is far more than just the changeroom and how finding your true self will let your spirit soar.As per usual,  features 'The 90 second nugget', 'Me and the World on a Page', 'A Note to Self' and of course, 'Weird Fishes'. Welcome to The Ebbs and The Flows, soft chats about hard stuff.Edited by The Ebbs and The FlowsThank you to Chantelle Clark for designs used to promote this episodeOn this episode of The Ebbs and The Flows, William talks about why Mental Health Matters in a solo chat about the challenges some of us face in a period where we are expected to feel joy and happiness, be it struggling to cut back, loneliness, difficult conversations with relatives or friends, grief and loss, as well as a conversation about conflict and the duality of beauty and brutality in relation to the conflict in the Middle East and an ode to those who joined us in 2023. Mental Health Matters focuses on the intimate details of how our mental health can make us feel ashamed, humiliated and isolated if we do not discuss the many faces of mental health. The misunderstood nature of these disorders and conditions is rife throughout society - so why not talk about them? Acknowledgements: Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0spQCw35D4Poem by Fadwa Tuqan: https://pij.org/articles/93/enough-for-me The Ebbs and the Flows is an emotional health movement focused on openness and transparency about the light and the shade of the lives we led and journeys we encounter. S2 E3B: EBBS with Pat Kennedy - part II of a candid conversation about alcoholism, addiction, seeing people in colour and not doing the thinking for everybody else.
For part I, check the episode out here (https://the-ebbs-and-the-flows.simplecast.com/episodes/s2-e3a-ebbs-with-pat-kennedy-a-candid-conversation-about-alcoholism-love-letters-to-the-things-that-are-destroying-us-crying-in-the-toilet-and-taking-vulnerable-risks-in-recovery)Pat Kennedy joins The Ebbs and The Flows for episode 3 (Part II) of Season 2. This was initially supposed to be a discussion that fit into one episode, however things took a turn for the better and what has been produced is two parts of a candid and open conversation about the respective struggles of two people connected by one season of footy in 2017. Pat Kennedy is a political staffer-cum-small business owner who has been sober for two and a half years after an exhausting and painful battle with booze ending in two visits to rehab and he is now a proud advocate for Alcoholics Anonymous. The second part of the conversation focuses on Pat's life post-alcohol - the consistent meetings, the breakthroughs, the heartaches and the struggles that come with sobriety, but also the supreme feeling of being 'there' and seeing people in colour for the first time in years. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, as the Pat I knew the last time we meet in person was a long way from the Pat who walked into the studio for this discussion. The second part features 'The 90 second nugget', 'Me and the World on a Page', 'A note to Self' and of course, 'Weird Fishes', alongside a couple of interludes for a conversation about 'rock bottom'. This has to be one of my favourite episodes so far, simply because I felt like I was in the company of a completely different person from the Pat I knew in 2017. I don't mean that offensively, because Pat has always been an intelligent, well spoken guy, but he really has found a part of himself he felt he had lost in the insidious battle with alcohol. Weird Fishes: Film: OppenheimerBook: Matthew Perry's Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing Album/Song: I'm Still Standing - Elton JohnLocal Recommendation: Canteen - CafeThe Ebbs and the Flows is an emotional health movement focused on openness and transparency about the light and the shade of the lives we led and journeys we encounter. S2 E3A: EBBS with Pat Kennedy - a candid conversation about alcoholism, love letters to the things that are destroying us, crying in the toilet and taking vulnerable risks in recovery
Pat Kennedy joins The Ebbs and The Flows for episode 3 (Part I) of Season 2. The first part of the conversation focuses on the perils of addiction, taking vulnerable risks in recovery, finding solace and meaning in Alcoholics Anonymous and a lengthy chat about William and Pat's connection at a football club in 2017 when both were lost in their own respective battles with their problems. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, as the Pat I knew the last time we meet in person was a long way from the Pat who walked into the studio for this discussion. This first part is something of a preamble to the classic EBBS format - with a candid, open and wonderfully transparent chat focusing on addiction and mental health, but with the periphery of the benefits and detractions of community, how social norms can be insidious and how our experiences shape us but taking risks in finding new environments and communities are essential in us finding out who the 'real you' truly is. The Ebbs and the Flows is an emotional health movement focused on openness and transparency about the light and the shade of the lives we led and journeys we encounter. S2 E2: EBBS with Jake Leslie on preparing for the worst, hoping for the best, the perils of comparison, transitions and the essentials of the wackiest of adventures in fatherhood
Jake Leslie joins The Ebbs and The Flows for episode 2 of Season 2 (number 12! We did it!!!) Jake is a strength and conditioning coach, sports therapist, lecturer across clubs such as the Western Bulldogs, the Melbourne Storm and the Melbourne Rebels, and a high performance coach at Optimus and The Hurt Locker, joins us as he is in transition, namely in work as he moves into medical device sales and in fatherhood. His effusive take on life is infectious with many great lessons from a life of embracing learning, consistency and showing up.When I asked Jake to come on the podcast, it was on the back of conversations we would have about life lessons as he trained me in the gym. I found one of the powerful pulls to get him on EBBS was the contrast between our experience with mental health - mine complex and challenging with his seemingly more straightforward approach, however in this is his process. He works hard at getting the simple things right so he has a foundation to push forward with his career for his family. His record with clients and clubs is exemplary, and his focus on self-improvement and the improvement of those around him is inspiring. We go deep here - into areas Jake hasn't explored for a while, and the rewards are in an episode I am most proud of.  As always, this episode includes segments such as 'A Note to Self', 'Work in Progress' and 'Weird Fishes', and 'The Art of The List', which features four things Jake has learnt about the notion of self-improvement and one thing he is still striving for, and 'ME AND THE WORLD ON A PAGE'. His note to self is a motivational push to 18-20 year old Jake. Season Two: EBBS with Ainslie Wills on finding your centre, drafting, how we can salvage the good parts from a lost relationship and why we should keep studying life

Season Two: EBBS with Ainslie Wills on finding your centre, drafting, how we can salvage the good parts from a lost relationship and why we should keep studying life
Ainslie Wills is the first guest of season two of The Ebbs and The Flows - this time we gonna keeeep going (til we get tired). Ainslie is a singer/songwriter who has been deeply influential here and abroad, while also the owner of Hello Daydream studio, a mentor and a mother. This conversation touches many bases from the difficulty finding your centre to 'awe' in live music to yoga, waves and being a lifelong learner, all the way to the existential bliss Ainslie is feeling as a mother who has moved back to the country. This is a moving, curious and wonderful conversation I have no doubt you'll enjoy. Ainslie Wills has released a lot of music, both with a band, solo, co-writing and in conjunction with artists such as #1 Dads, however it is in her current form where she has found a period of her life where she has found bliss, with a young child and a move to Macedon Ranges to open a studio. Her brilliance as a performer is such that many fans and people new to her music walk away moved. Her new EP featuring the tracks 'Celebrate' and 'Eyes on Me' is called 'Pink EP' and it sees her returning to her roots with the piano and her soaring and incredibly versatile vocals. However this conversation features so much more than just music, covering Ainslie's move into yoga teaching, the pull of country air, the depths she has gone to with her songwriting, her love of musical theatre, Jeff Buckley and her love-hate relationship with streaming services, and so many incredible insights into vulnerability, relationships and how nature inspires. It's a really wonderful way to get back into The Ebbs and The Flows. As always, this episode includes segments such as 'A Note to Self', 'Work in Progress' and 'Weird Fishes', and a new segment called 'The Art of The List', which features four things Ainslie has learnt about songwriting from the heart and one thing she is still striving for, and 'ME AND THE WORLD ON A PAGE'. Her note to self is a tender and loving ode, found around the one hour mark of the episode. The Ebbs and the Flows is an emotional health movement focused on openness and transparency about the light and the shade of the lives we led and journeys we encounter. The Ebbs and The Flows on Living in a Remote Community, The Season That Was and an Isolated Conversation without the mask
Welcome to The Ebbs and The Flows, soft chats about hard stuff.Edited by The Ebbs and The FlowsThank you to Chantelle Clark for designs used to promote this episodeOn this episode of The Ebbs and The Flows, William talks about living in a remote community in Balgo, Western Australia. The history of Balgo coming into the 45th referendum since 1901 - we talk about The Voice to Parliament. Should we care? Is it doomed? Why does it matter? We also reflect upon the first season of the Ebbs and The Flows as we go into hiatus until October. Finally, an intimate chat in an isolated setting, removing the mask, William answers the questions our guests have answered in an emotive, open and deeply honest and deeply human conversation. Mental Health Matters focuses on the intimate details of how our mental health can make us feel ashamed, humiliated and isolated if we do not discuss the many faces of mental health. The misunderstood nature of these disorders and conditions is rife throughout society - so why not talk about them? Welcome back to The Ebbs and The Flows: soft chats about hard stuff. The Ebbs and The Flows with Simon Hogan, former AFL footballer, mental health advocate, community leader in the health sector and proud girldad.Edited by The Ebbs and The FlowsThank you to Chantelle Clark for designs used to promote this episodeWe also acknowledge the idea of Ainslie Wills which we have adapted for the use in the segment 'Me and the world on a page/stage'This week's guest is Simon Hogan, former Geelong Cat, mental health advocate, spokesperson and leader, public health expert, father, husband with a genuine love and care for those around him and the communities he belongs to. Simon Hogan played for the Geelong Cats throughout 2007-2012 before retiring at the tender age of 24. His football journey was a surprising one, having been a high academic achiever in Warrnambool and drafted in the same draft as Tom Hawkins and premiership captain Joel Selwood by the Cats. His career is highlighted by his openness and honesty in the face of immense challenges with his mental health. Simon speaks openly about his diagnoses, including Type 2 Bipolar, but also about the arrival of his first child, Maeve, and his beautiful relationship with his wife Kate and his mother. It is a conversation this podcast was built for: Brutality, fear, sadness and struggle tied into joy, curiosity, love, hope and wonder and awe. We cannot begin to express our gratitude for this wonderful man being so transparent on this episode. It's a beauty. As always, this episode includes segments such as 'A Note to Self', 'Work in Progress' and 'Weird Fishes', and a new segment called 'The Art of The List', which features five things Simon has learnt about mental health, and ME AND THE WORLD ON A PAGE/STAGE. His note to self is not to be missed, found around the 50 minute mark of the episode. The Ebbs and the Flows is an emotional health movement focused on openness and transparency about the light and the shade of the lives we led and journeys we encounter. The Ebbs and The Flows: The Power of Music with Charlotte Abroms
Welcome to The Ebbs and The Flows, soft chats about hard stuff. Edited by The Ebbs and The FlowsThank you to Chantelle Clark for designs used to promote this episodeAlso acknowledgement to India Raine for her assistance in the production of the episodeOn this episode,  Charlotte is a Melbourne based music manager and creative, guiding the careers of artists and producers. She is the previous recipient of the Lighthouse Award, the Fast Track Fellowship and the most Outstanding Woman in Music award presented by Music Victoria. She values kindness, creativity, mental well-being, humour and music above all else. Charlotte has managed artists such as Angie McMahon, Gretta Ray and Ainslie Wills, along with many other notable artists and producers. She has developed a sustainable way to build strong and trusting relationships with her clients, away from the stereotypes of the 'old school slicked hair big shot man' manager who we are so used to seeing in films and on TV. This discussion looks at how music is a conduit for poetry, our wellbeing, the relationships we have with our friends, lovers and family, those biiiiig feelings and complex thoughts and accompanies some of our life's most instrumental moments. We hear her beautiful Letter to Self (around the one hour mark), her valuable lessons as a new mother and the guiding compass of vulnerability and sensitivity. But most importantly, how has Charlotte's music taste changed over her one precious life?!?!Check out Charlotte's 'Unlock The Vault' event with Ainslie Wills - https://www.hearheargroup.com/workshopsA couple of Charlotte's local recommendation... number one: Alexander Biggs (musician): https://www.instagram.com/biggsalexander/?hl=enAnd also... not being biased, but this is a goodie... The Power of Footy with Neil Balme
Welcome to The Ebbs and The Flows, soft chats about hard stuff. Edited by The Ebbs and The FlowsThank you to Chantelle Clark for designs used to promote this episodeOn this episode, we chat to Neil Balme, a footballing encyclopedia of experiences, successes and heartbreaks. Player, coach, administrator, and now Footy Advisor at Richmond, Neil's journey in footy has covered all grounds possible, with a spot in Richmond and Norwood's Hall of Fame. At the ripe old age of 71, he has entered a phase of his life where he can reflect on the many learnings he has had in footy and life, as well as the immense change he has seen in football, including women's footy, the rapid escalation of mental health care at clubs, the cultural shift in the pressing need and desire to connect with community, as well as the continuation of the fierce desire for clubs to win (but is it at all costs as it used to be???) This is a widesweeping discussion between father and son - an intimate chat, but a rewarding one. Grab a cold drink and tune in to a chat between the ol' Generation Balme firm. Neil's book 'A Tale of Two Men', written by Anson Cameron is available here: https://www.readings.com.au/product/9781761042102/neil-balme--anson-cameron-neil-balme--2022--9781761042102# or at any good bookshop (support local)Neil and William will be speaking at a fundraiser breakfast event for 'Read the Play' in Geelong on August the 4th, hosted by Cameron Ling.
