'Eric Allan Dolphy Jr. (June 20, 1928 – June 29, 1964) was an American jazz multi-instrumentalist and bandleader. Primarily an alto saxophonist, bass clarinetist, and flautist, Dolphy was one of several multi-instrumentalists to gain prominence during the same era. His use of the bass clarinet helped to establish the unconventional instrument within jazz. Dolphy extended the vocabulary and boundaries of the alto saxophone, and was among the earliest significant jazz flute soloists.' From Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Dolphy Who was Eric Dolphy? Well.. he played with John Coltrane and Charles Mingus, and - in my opinion - his playing was more lyrical, more versatile and more exhilarating than both of them. This compilation covers the period 1960-1964, when he was really coming into his own, both as a bandleader and as a collaborator. Whilst touring Europe in 1964 his undiagnosed diabetes cause him to collapse and fall into a coma. Allegedly, the attending hospital physicians did not know Dolphy was a diabetic and assumed, based on a stereotype of jazz musicians, that he had overdosed on drugs. This is a compilation of my personal Dolphy favourites. I haven't included anything from Out To Lunch, still waiting for my brain to catch up with that. 1 Eric Dolphy - Warm Canto 1961 5.32 The Quest (Dolphy & Waldron) Mal Waldron piano, Joe Benjamin – bass, Ron Carter - cello , Charles Persip – drums 2 Oliver Nelson - Stolen Moments 1961 8.42 – The Blues And The Abstract Truth LP.
