Matthew 22: 37-38 (NKJV)Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’”
There is no greater message than the message of Love, which is the heart of the Gospel. If you do not know how to love one another, love God, or experience His love, then life is nothing, and your spiritual walk is nothing. As stated in 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 (NKJV): "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing."
The world defines love as affection, fondness, warmth, and intimacy, but the definition of love in the biblical context is different. God's love is the very essence of who He is, as we see in 1 John 4:16 (NKJV): "And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him."
God is the definition of Love, and if God is truly living in you, you must emulate love in everything you do and with everyone you come into contact with. Love is a spirit, and if we carry the Spirit of God within us, then that spirit should flow outward from us, demonstrating love to others.
There are four biblical types of love:
- Eros: Sensual or Romantic Love
- Storge: Family Love
- Philia: Friendship or Brotherly Love
- Agape: God’s Love (Agape was originally translated as Ahavah, pronounced Ah-ha-vah. It is a biblical Hebrew word meaning "to love.")
