In this third episode of the PrimeInvestor podcast, hosts Gaurav Menon and Vidya Bala (co-founder, PrimeInvestor.in) cover key news events and discuss all things related to sector funds. We start with the news events that have an impact on the markets and your investments. We talk about the Nifty crossing the 19,000 mark, Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the US and the FDI inflows from Google, Amazon, Micron and GE Aerospace, the large scale block deals in the market, and the HDFC and HDFC Bank merger. Vidya then provide insights and analysis on these events and how they affect the economy and investors. Next, we move on to the main topic of the podcast, sector funds, which are investment funds that invest in one type of industry or sector. Vidya explains what sector funds are, how they work, and whether they are worth investing in or not. She also differentiates between sector funds and theme funds, which invest in different sectors or industries based on a common theme. Here, we caution the listeners about the risks involved in sector and theme funds, as they are more volatile, cyclical, and dependent on external factors than diversified funds. Vidya advises the listeners to invest in these funds only if they have a high risk appetite, a good understanding of the sector or theme, and a short to medium term investment horizon. She also suggests that investors should use SIPs rather than lumpsums to invest in these funds, and time both their entry and exit based on their own research and analysis. Vidya also give some tips on how to choose a sector or theme fund, based on various factors. She emphasizes that investors should compare different funds based on these factors and choose the one that best suits their risk-return profile and investment objective. She also recommends that investors should review their investments periodically and make changes as per the changing market conditions. Key segments in the podcast discussion: Nifty crosses 19,000 mark PM Modi’s visit to US and FDI inflows Large scale block deals in the market Byju's and other cash burning startups HDFC and HDFC Bank merger Risk in Sector Funds Lumpsum vs SIP for Sector Funds Importance of timing in Sector Funds How to find the best Sector Fund Veteran VC Kanwal Rekhi on Byju’s chaos PrimeInvestor Financial Research Private Limited is a SEBI Registered Research Analyst with Registration No.: INH200008653. Balanced Advantage Funds, RBI Monetary Policy & Smallcap Funds
In this second episode of the PrimeInvestor podcast, hosts Gaurav Menon and Bhavana Acharya (co-founder, PrimeInvestor.in) cover key news events and discuss Balanced Advantage Funds and other hybrid funds. We begin by highlighting MRF, which has become the first stock in India to cross Rs.1,00,000 per share. Next, we discuss the recent RBI monetary policy where the rates were kept unchanged due to concerns about inflation. The RBI projected inflation at 5.1% for the rest of the fiscal year, indicating a likely prolonged pause on rates. Factors like monsoon conditions, global influences, and the Federal Reserve's decision on rate hikes will be closely monitored for future policy actions. Regarding debt fund investments, Bhavana advises investors to consider their investment timeframes and opt for a mix of short duration, corporate bond, or gilt funds. We also suggest exploring bank/SFB fixed deposits or attractive bond options due to the current favorable interest rates. Moving on to market trends, we discuss the performance of mid-cap and small-cap indices. While mid-cap indices have hit new all-time highs, small-cap indices are gradually catching up. This indicates broader market participation and suggests a positive outlook for the overall market. We caution against jumping into small-cap funds solely based on recent high returns, emphasizing the need for a long-term investment approach and considering the associated risks. We then recommend adding mid-cap or small-cap funds to portfolios with proper asset allocation and focusing on long-term investments. Lastly, we address the question of whether balanced advantage funds are a safer option in the current market scenario. Here, we explain that these funds invest in both equity and debt, with a portion of equity being hedged through derivatives. However, the degree of hedging and risk varies across funds, and their performance can differ significantly. While balanced advantage funds can help reduce portfolio risk, they are not substitutes for debt funds and should be added with the intention of mitigating equity exposure risk. Bhavana also cautions against relying on multi-asset allocation funds for dynamic asset allocation, as the fund's calls on allocation may not align with individual risk profiles and timeframes. She recommends treating hybrid funds as low-risk routes for equity investments and suggest investors thoroughly understand a fund's allocations before making investment decisions. We conclude by emphasizing the importance of considering individual portfolio composition, risk tolerance, and investment goals when making investment decisions.
