#32 Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun
This week I ‘suffer not the heretic to live’ in Warhammer 40K:Boltgun by Auroch Digital and Focus Entertainment. You may know this game as the DOOM-like 'boomer-shooter' set in the Warhammer 40K universe. Though the game looks visually stunning and seems a no-brainer for the mix of doom FPS and Warhammer 40K, is it actually any good? If you enjoyed this episode and you’re in the mood to list to another review about an FPS that didn't live up to its potential, check out episode 13 and my review of Redfall. https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/0rwzGx1MHIb Have you checked out Warhammer 40K: Boltgun already or is it still sitting in your backlog? #31 Venba
Venba just won the Seumas Mcnally Grand Prize at the Independent Game Festival but what is the game about and is it worth knocking off your backlog? Let's find out in this week's episode. In addition, I also give you my impressions of the SandLand demo that was recently released. If you enjoyed this episode and you’re in the mood to experience a bit more about Indian culture in video games, check out episode 22 of the podcast about Thirsty Suitors- it was one of my favourite games of 2023. #22 Thirsty Suitors
Today we will be facing our seven-not-so-evil exes in Outerloop Games and Annapurna Interactives’ Thirsty Suitors. The best way to describe this game is a mix between Scott Pilgrim vs the World and the TV show Sex education, with turn-based battles and Tony Hawk-like skateboarding thrown in to add some spice to this already well seasoned game. Its story of a 20-something Indian-American woman called Jala returning to her hometown with her tail between her legs is edgy, horny, touching and funny. Though I don’t think the game nails exactly what it is going for, it is nevertheless one of the most interesting indies I have played this year and is a must play for anyone ticking games off of their best of 2023 list. Which is shown in its Metracrtic scores sitting at an 80, 75, 77 and 75 on PC, Switch, Xbox and PS5 respectively. HLTB has the game at around 8 hours for its story and around about 17 hours for completionist, so it is a quite short game if you plan to fit it in before the end of the year. What's more, if you have Xbox Games Pass, at the time of recording it is available there and that is where I played it. But what makes Thirsty Suitors so interesting, why did it not quite nail the mark in my eyes and what is so damn horny about it? Let’s find out in this week’s episode of the Beat Your Backlog Podcast. Let me know what you thought of Thirsty Suitors by hitting me up on Twitter or Insta. #19 Super Mario Bros. Wonder- My first 2D Mario game!

#19 Super Mario Bros. Wonder- My first 2D Mario game!
Shocking, I know. As a kid I never grew up playing Mario games but tried to get into them as a teenager when the new 2D Super Mario Bros came out on the Nintendo DS. I never 'got' those games, they felt a little bit bland. . . so will Mario Wonder get me into 2D Mario games and is the game worth playing? Spoilers: YES! This game is fantastic, Wonder is up there with the quality of Odyssey, the humor of the Mario movie and the sense of joy that comes with exploring a magical world, like in the Nintendo theme parks. In my opinion, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the best 2D Mario game of the modern era. There were some things I didn't like and way more things I loved, but you'll have to listen to the podcast to find out more about those ;) Is Mario Wonder on your backlog? Let me know on social media. Please remember to subscribe and leave a review if you enjoyed the episode :) Want to discuss this game? #13 Redfall Impressions and what is going on with Xbox?
13, unlucky for some. Maybe that's why I was so negative in this episode! I tried my hardest to play the most recent Xbox Game Studios release: Redfall. After about two hours I rage quit from the game and uninstalled it from my console. Redfall seems like a lot of good ideas taken from other games mixed into one but lacks any real focus, drive or direction. Its intriguing story and interesting location are marred by bad game design choices and the lack of the most basic gaming foundations like points on a map telling you where to go and animated cut scenes. I hope this game continues to be worked on as I really wanted to like it and would love to come back to it in a year to try it again. However, in its current state, Redfall is not worth yours or my time. What is going on with Xbox? How could they let such a game go out to the public? Is this a problem with designing games for Game Pass? After my Redfall impressions, I give my thoughts about what is going on with Xbox and why Starfield could be make or break for them.
