In the Key of Q

‘It shouldn’t come down to heteronormative or gay. It should just come down to human interactions and relationships.’ Joey hails from Northern Virginia in the United States and is the oldest of four children. His music entertains a myriad of genres include dance, R&B, rock, Latin fusion, and electro beats. Whilst his material is mainstream, he never strays from his core intersectional identity as a gay man of Latin descent. In this episode he talks about growing up in the multicultural regions around Washington DC, and the freedom that performing on stage gave him from an early age. He discusses being negatively profiled due to his Latin heritage and shares his thoughts on the Queer community’s fetishization of race. This podcast aims to celebrate those musicians and raise the profile of their music so we can feel connected, heard and not alone.’ Earlier highlights include https://player.captivate.fm/episode/7b66c7ac-42b3-4e0e-8fa4-a7223772a40c (Carrington Kelso), https://player.captivate.fm/episode/22a8a089-46ae-4489-bb45-a30e933eb365 (Brendan Maclean), https://player.captivate.fm/episode/b05248dd-d2e7-41ce-9779-3f6189bcb83e (Emmet Michael), https://player.captivate.fm/episode/240a098a-dab5-4061-9146-d7e700f1178d (Matt Fishel), https://player.captivate.fm/episode/ac6a69ce-d7e1-4376-abc8-62c57350fb43 (Bowie Special with Janette Mason & David McAlmont), https://player.captivate.fm/episode/b9d311c5-5903-4c5f-8ceb-86c040e944eb (The IZM), https://player.captivate.fm/episode/d40975e0-ebc7-4e43-91ca-93ec4a70df55 (Tom Goss), https://player.captivate.fm/episode/e21ae566-a86a-4fc8-a5ba-b6a4fd4c1350 (Rebel Will), https://player.captivate.fm/episode/2da0a6fe-1769-4025-bdd3-0525ce0987d5 (Jsky), https://player.captivate.fm/episode/80ab65df-042a-4eb0-a4b5-5c975b83e7ea (Blake Mundell), https://player.captivate.fm/episode/6874f5f9-af3f-41a7-b565-963aa8d1e48f (Aruan Duvall), https://player.captivate.fm/episode/be2edbc9-9f5c-4580-b5eb-c5370a9f356c (Vincent DiGeronimo), and the Black Queer America specials (https://player.captivate.fm/episode/92ce250c-6fc7-4909-9f44-7d66fc59d21e (Part 1) and https://player.captivate.fm/episode/520e56c0-8996-4a2e-a229-dae9120e00b4 (Part 2)).
