Episode 30: Southern Author Josie Olsvig
Today's episode is with Southern Author Josie Olsvig discussing the Gullah Culture and her two newly published books. Guest Bio & Links: Josie Olsvig is a new Southern author who lives in the Sea Islands of Beaufort, South Carolina. In the past year, she has published two books on the Gullah culture of West African slave descendants living in the Coastal Carolinas. Her children’s book entitled Growing Up Gullah in the Lowcountry has been well received and is available through the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC, and other local vendors. Her historical novel, Gullah Tears, The Enslaved Souls of Charleston, was released in November 2020 and is set in antebellum Charleston, South Carolina. It is currently being adapted for a miniseries. In her prior life, Josie was an attorney and social worker who spent her career addressing child abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Her call to service was spurred by early life experiences growing up in poverty in the inner city. Josie experienced a great deal of hardship, strife, and violence and subsequently felt called to serve others. Josie was challenged to change her life circumstances and put herself through undergraduate and graduate school, where she gained degrees in social work and law. (BA Social Work, Wright State; MSSW University of Louisville, JD Hofstra Law) She also studied public administration and public policy at the London School of Economics. She was subsequently barred in multiple jurisdictions and admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court. Before her retirement, Josie wrote legal articles on social and child welfare issues. After moving to the South from the Midwest, Josie became deeply interested in the Gullah culture and race-based slavery. After a career fighting injustice, Josie chose to put pen to paper and focus on one of the greatest injustices of all time, slavery in the Antebellum South. After publishing her first two books, she has begun to write articles for local and regional websites, blogs, and the Modern African Diaspora Experience Museum located in Dayton, Ohio. Episode 24: Understanding Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion In The Corporate Space
A webinar on how personal experiences and professional duties can intersect with getting involved in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Holly Noon will be sharing her personal and professional journey with DEI and recommending ways to get started in your own DEI journey. Recommendations For Taking Action: - Define your values, prioritize humanity - Think beyond diversity, to inclusivity - Acknowledging there is a problem and DEI work is necessary - Use your brand for impact I.e., Organizations like Target, or Old Navy donating money and/or creating marketing ads around the Black Lives Matter movement and promoting the importance of diversity. - Checks and balances are in place to make sure any initiatives put in place are being worked toward or assessed to determine what resources are needed to reach the goal. For example, if the company plans to have more diversity in management within the next 3 years, what steps have been taken? What still needs to happen? - Take the initiative to search beyond social media as education and awareness is key - Do seek out support from your human resources team or office of diversity and inclusion - Focus on Initiatives that Change Root Causes About: So Please Understand posts weekly content on trending topics, personal stories, interviews, and collaborations with other content creators. Episode 19: The Need for Diversity in Aviation with Jerome Stanislaus

Episode 19: The Need for Diversity in Aviation with Jerome Stanislaus
In today's episode, I will be chatting with the pilot and author, Jerome Stanislaus about his journey to become a private pilot and his mission to diversify the aviation industry. Bio for Jerome Stanislaus: Stanislaus is a former elementary school teacher, former sergeant, and satellite operator for the U.S. Marine Corps, and is currently serving in the U.S. Air Force Reserve training to be a flight engineer on a Lockheed C–5 Galaxy. He enjoys skydiving and has written an aviation-themed children’s book called My Mom Is So Fly. “Before I was on active orders for the Air Force, I was an elementary school teacher at an all-girls charter school in Brooklyn. I spent most of my days surrounded by kindergarten through fourth-grade students. I would ask them what they wanted to be when they grew up, and there was an overwhelming number of girls who wanted to be police officers, firefighters, beauticians, et cetera. Although these careers are important, I thought there should be some diversity in their answers. But I realized these were the only types of professions that they knew about—it was what seemed realistic. The book was my way of helping introduce otherwise unrealistic career paths to my students,” he said. Stanislaus received viral news coverage last year about giving free discovery flights to children—often from minority and underprivileged backgrounds. He’s currently stationed at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee, Massachusetts. “One of my dad’s favorite stories was about a family vacation to St. Lucia. I was 3 years old, and as the plane began to lift off the ground, I yelled, “Wow, this is magnificent,” and the surrounding passengers turned to see who this toddler was using the word ‘magnificent.’” Stanislaus says his goal to be in a position to help “as many people as I can on their journey to fulfill their aviation-related goals. I’d like to buy an airplane, get my CFI/CFII ratings, and start a flight school. I’d also like to be able to sponsor young student pilots that are looking to get into aviation. I’d like to help them earn their private pilot license for free or as close to free as possible.” Cite: https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2020/october/pilot/people-jerome-stanislaus Social Media: Instagram @Tuskegeebloodline
