Ep. 113: Saving My Enemy- the incredible new "Band of Brothers"
In honor of Veterans Day, we have a very special episode for you. After any war, including WWII, soldiers are often deeply haunted by what they saw and did during the war. American Don Malarkey and German Fritz Engelbert, both depicted in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers for fighting in one of the biggest military operations of all time, were no different. For 60 years, they held onto guilt and pain from WWII…until something happened that changed the rest of their lives and gave them peace.Today I’m joined by Don's daughter, Marianne, and Fritz’s sons, Matthias and Volker, to hear about an unlikely close friendship that is almost impossible for veterans who had seen each other as enemies for decades. I was blown away when I first heard their story! You’ll hear:Why Don and Fritz each joined their country’s military in the 1940’sWhat D-Day and The Battle of the Bulge was like for both sidesWhat led to an extremely unusual encounter 60 years after the warHow that encounter totally changed their lives and the lives of their familiesHow the book Saving My Enemy by Bob Welch, which details their story, came to be writtenOrder a copy of Saving My Enemy on Amazon HEREEnter to win a free e-copy of the book (drawing will be November 17)Leave a review of this podcast on your favorite platform; it helps us get these stories out to more people who need to hear them!To give specific feedback directly to us on what you like about the podcast and what you don’t, fill out this 5-minute survey.Don’t let fear win. Ep. 112: Greg Coker- The most deadly weapon on any battlefield
Night Stalker pilots are some of my greatest heroes, and many times, my life has depended on their insanely accurate shooting abilities. Greg Coker and I fought together in Iraq and Afghanistan, and he was an AH-6 little bird gun pilot in the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment for 15 years. VERY few helicopter pilots on the planet make it to that level, and his no-quit attitude, skill, and commitment make him unbeatable. You’ll hear:What it was like to go through the grueling Green Platoon training that only a handful of pilots finishWhat he and I both agree is the most deadly weapon on the battlefieldHis story of surviving being shot down in Iraq and narrowly escaping his helicopter on fireWhat kept him getting back in the cockpit again and again despite 42 surgeries and having 47 pieces of titanium in his bodyWhy he started Blades for Brothers, a non-profit for veterans and first respondersLearn more about Blades for Brothers hereEnter HERE for a chance to win an e-copy of Greg’s book, Death Waits in the Dark: Six Guns Don't Miss! Ep. 108: (Part 5) Starring in Black Hawk Down Changed My Life - Matthew Marsden
In the finale of our 5-part Black Hawk Down series to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Operation Gothic Serpent, I sat down with Actor and Musician Matthew Marsden. You may recognize him from films like Helen of Troy or Shiner, but when he played Army Ranger Dale Sizemore in the film Black Hawk Down, it was the role of a lifetime. That experience changed the trajectory of his life and bonded him forever with US Army Rangers. I was skeptical at first about the story being turned into a movie (find out why in this episode), but I’m really proud of the work Matthew and the other actors did and how they portrayed us.What you’ll hear:How he beat the odds to build a successful Hollywood career, coming from a small community in the UKWhat it was like training with Army Rangers to prepare for Black Hawk Down and how it transformed his lifeWhy he believes the USA is the greatest country in the worldHow he became a committed Christian and what drives him to speak up boldly about it in a hostile Hollywood environmentWhat he has in common with Jim Caviezel and Gary SiniseLeave a review of this podcast on your favorite platform; it helps us get these stories out to more people who need to hear them!To give specific feedback directly to us on what you like about the podcast and what you don’t, fill out this 5-minute survey.Don’t let fear win.
