Highlighting Your Values as a Wedding Vendor with Photographer Sonja Siikanen

Highlighting Your Values as a Wedding Vendor with Photographer Sonja Siikanen
I interviewed Sonja Siikanen (they/them), a queer, feminist wedding and boudoir photographer from Finland, who was recommended to me by two separate Lovebird Listeners! Here’s what I asked them about: Sonja’s own wedding, and… Creating safer spaces Sharing core values with your guests What it means to live in a “top” country for queer folks The tiny queer scene in a small country like Finland How the bar for what counts as “good” for queer folks is so low it’s literally on the floor Why marriers should lean into their values when planning a wedding… And, why it can be challenging to be inclusive when planning your wedding Sonja’s take + my evolving opinions on styled shoots The increasing popularity of boudoir shoots and why Sonja loves them for being super empowering, especially for marginalized people, and for the celebration of all bodies (when we share them publicly). Corrections Corner: In this episode, I say gay marriage was legalized in Canada in 1995 and that is unfortunately a decade earlier than when it was actually legalized.  Follow Sonja on Instagram and learn more about their values or find out how to work with them on their website. Planning an Eco-Friendly Wedding with Event Sustainability Expert Romina Kwong
I’m joined by my friend, the brilliant Romina Kwong (she/her), who is tackling event sustainability as both the founder and lead consultant at her business, Eco-Friendly Events, and as a teacher at Seneca College where she has co-created a micro-credential for Foundations of Sustainability in Event Management. We talked about… The most influential factors on your event’s ecological footprint, and what you can do to mitigate their impact; Who is responsible for making an event eco-friendly - the vendors, the planners, or the marriers? How to do your best to be eco-responsible while still staying true to your wedding vision; The connection between eco-responsibility and feminism; What a wedding planned with sustainability in mind might look like! This episode is just the tip of the iceberg, so I encourage you to follow Romina on Instagram @‌ecofriendly.events and check out her website: www.ecofriendlyevents.ca. Romina doesn’t plan weddings, but if you want her eyes on your event plan (or, as a vendor, on your business!) you can book a consult with her directly. Find me on Instagram, where I answer all of my DM'S, and check out my website to see how you can get me as your personal wedding coach!   Music is Blackout Romeo by The Spin Wires.   RESOURCES T. Lees candles - locally made and woman-owned! Love them. I shouted out @‌flourishandknot, a Montreal florist I worked with on this styled shoot (photographed by Pam McKay) for her efforts to be eco-responsible and for teaching me about pinfrogs! #nofloralfoam @‌flowermoxie - a florist who teaches wedding DIY and ships flowers to you (right now, only in the United States) for small weddings. I really don’t recommend DIYing your florals for most people but I’ve seen a few smaller weddings (70-100 guests max!) do this with success, especially when they managed their expectations appropriately ;) Romina brought up something I said in a recent episode of The Feminist Wedding Podcast. It’s this one: The Right Way to Negotiate With Your Wedding Vendors (Without Pissing Them Off)

All About Lighting Design + An Event Vent Sesh with Mr. Robert Lynch
In this episode I interview my friend Rob Lynch, a lighting designer I’ve been working with for almost 20 years. We talk about: WTF a lighting designer even does, and the impact of lighting on any event (a thread that runs through the whole) How lighting impacts your event, at every key timeline moment What the lights are called, and what they do, so you’re prepared to understand a quote from a lighting company (likely handled along with your audio!) Colour! We also have some major digressions, because when Event Folk (TM pending) get together we cannot help but talk about all the things… What wedding guests do that drive us nuts What wedding vendors do that drive us nuts   You can introduce yourself to Rob on Instagram @‌mrrobertlynch and/or check out his website robertlynch.com - and keep in mind he’ll give you 20% off of his services if you book your lighting directly through him! The Right Way to Negotiate With Your Wedding Vendors (Without Pissing Them Off)
This episode is an answer to a question from a listener (now client!) who asked about the wedding tax and negotiating with wedding vendors. I couldn’t fit the answer in an Instagram story, so here’s an almost hour-long episode about it! Here’s what I cover: What is the wedding tax, and can it be justified? I look at arguments from both advocates and critics and give my take on it; I also talk about some of the more common economic models of wedding planning, breaking down commissions and kickbacks, and explaining how the percentage-based model works, giving you, as always, my unfiltered opinion on how things are done BTS; The do’s + don’t's of wedding vendor negotiation (haggling) including: Templates for the first and second email you’ll send during the process; Red flags to look out for; Who you could consider negotiating with; Understanding that when you pay less, you should expect to get less… And reasons you might be eligible for a reduced rate! Why you shouldn’t ghost your potential wedding vendors (and what to do instead) How not to be a red flag and operate in good faith when negotiating with a vendor! Find me on Instagram, where I answer all of my DM'S, and check out my website to find out how you can get me as your personal wedding coach! Music is Blackout Romeo by The Spin Wires.   RESOURCES I mention two episodes where you can hear me coaching past clients: one with Jamie Moar and another with Marlee Rabin. I talk briefly about my dad! His company is Kloda Productions, and while he used to do absolutely everything event production-related… he sold most of the company and now focuses on inflatable games. One day I’ll do an episode about being an event brat ;)

The Perfect (Classic) Wedding Day Timeline
As I’m devoted to wedding season right now, I’ve decided to end the first season of TFWP with something top of mind: The Perfect (Classic) Wedding Day Timeline. This episode is basically a wedding day timeline template… with just a few sidebars ;) You know me - there are no holds barred as I tell you what I love and hate to see on a timeline, what I’ve learned from my past experiences, and where I see lots of room to fuck with tradition. I talk about: The four pages of the perfect schedule: The Rehearsal, The Set-Up, The Cocktail + The Ceremony, and The Reception; The time allotment for everything: from hair and makeup, to your photos, to how long it takes to serve the salad course; I also talk about cool (and not so cool) surprise elements and where they might fit in on your wedding day. Find me on Instagram, where I answer all of my DM's, check out my website, or go right ahead and book a free, no-strings chat with me. Music is Blackout Romeo by The Spin Wires. Lesbian Weddings: From the Proposal to the Honeymoon, with Bride Navy Founder Ty Sintrell

Lesbian Weddings: From the Proposal to the Honeymoon, with Bride Navy Founder Ty Sintrell
Ty Sintrell (she/her), founder of Bride Navy, joins me to talk about how lesbian weddings are different and special, but also kind of the same as straight weddings. This is something the wedding industry has to learn to hold in balance, both that queer weddings are special and unique, and, also, that queer weddings are, first and foremost, weddings! And they can and often will have all of the trappings of hetero weddings. Here’s what we chatted about: We talked briefly about Ty’s own wedding that she’s planning with her fiancée, and I offered some advice about getting their seemingly very different visions to line up together; How the proposal happens, and how couples decide who will propose; Lesbian wedding outfits (surprise surprise - both Ty and I think you’ll be best off going custom!); Every aspect of the day itself, from how you’ll walk down the aisle to a rousing and surprising game of Keep or Toss with reception traditions; The many things that don’t change, no matter who is getting married, including the challenge of scheduling your honeymoon and the importance of a day of coordinator; Gratitude journals (I like the 5 Minute Journal); How to find gay friendly vendors, and how to share that you’re a gay friendly vendor! Find Ty on her website and Instagram. Find me on Instagram, where I answer all of my DM'S, and check out my website to learn more about The Jumpstart, The Journey, and The Wedding Edit. How to Be a Feminist in the Wedding Industry with Bridal Wear Designer Hillary O'Dell
I spoke with (and was blown away by) Hillary O’Dell, lead designer and founder of Hilandel, which specializes in custom bridal wear about all of the ways she infuses her values into her business and makes her part of the process of wedding planning a safe place. We talked about: How we are forever figuring out the “vibe check” part of working with a new client The challenge of this industry where marriers are expected to have a vision and just know what they want and know how the industry works, when in reality you are doing this for the first time! Body neutrality and how Hillary helps brides navigate the complexity of custom wedding dress design, and her magical process The wide range of possibilities for wedding outfits, and why Hillary uses the word “bride” (it’s an aesthetic, not a gender!) Hillary is completely brilliant and her work is stunning, and she leads her business with her heart and her values, and it’s beautiful to witness. Carrie-Ann Loves Boundaries

Carrie-Ann Loves Boundaries
Something I help my clients with over and over is boundary-setting (and boundary-maintaining, arguably more challenging). Boundaries are going to come up when you're wedding planning, in part because the simple act requires a renegotation of entrenched family dynamics. Dealing with toxic family or family drama while planning happens to nearly every couple. In the episode, I address the ones I see most commonly, and respond to a listener question about managing divorced parents who can’t stand each other. It’s a huge topic to cover, but boundaries are a very important part of my life, and the way I support my clients, from figuring out what the wedding of your dreams even looks like, to deciding on the perfect guest list (and how to manage input about it) and determining how involved your parents will even be in the wedding planning. But always, always - I want you to be planning to be *married*! So figuring out how to defend your new family and be a team are integral to my work (and boundaries are a major part of being a solid team). This isn’t the first time I've spoken up about boundaries, and it won’t be the last - and I know there are haters out there but they’re not my people. ;) Find me on Instagram, where I answer all of my DM'S, and check out my website to work with me (and to grab my free Wedding Budget Workshop). I sat down with her to talk about… How she developed her expertise, and how she turns it into wedding content that is both hilarious and educational The traditionally narrow view of weddings (who they are for, what you can wear, how it should look) versus the more expansive view that welcomes a variety of wedding styles, of marriers, of budgets, etc. Finding plus size at every price point, and the benefits and challenges that go along with each budget The pressure of wedding dress shopping and diet culture in the wedding industry Queer wedding fashion! How to Have a Chill Wedding (and Marriage) with Jaime Moar
In this episode I talk to Jaime Moar, a past client of mine who is fascinating and has many passions (and many businesses), but is a particularly interesting guest because she is a yoga teacher and alignment coach. We dig into: How she planned her wedding with more ease, with her partner and both of their families very involved, and what specifically helped keep her chill How Jaime and her husband, Duncan, made sure their wedding represented them and their values, and what impact that had on their experience The DIY aspect: what they did, whether it was worth it, and what stressed her out more than anything We got deep into our own marriages, and what’s working for us to help us be on the same page as our partners And, if you know Jaime or me, then it won’t surprise you that of course we weaved in a little bit of Human Design.
