Our Editor's Take

Secrets, Crimes & Audiotape is a compelling podcast. Despite the title, the program is not about true crime. Instead, it is more like an audio comedy-drama. The show features host David Rheinstrom and celebrity voices acting out the parts. Some of the stories have at least some basis in truth, but this show tells them as fictionalized versions.

Secrets, Crimes & Audiotape debuted in 2016. Each episode or group of episodes has its own style and plot. But all works well for this show. All feature some sort of secret. The show began with "Air Force One." The two-part episode featured actor Stacy Keach portraying Lyndon Baines Johnson. Actress Glenn Headly played Jacqueline Kennedy. The secret is about how the First Lady feels about the vice president. Other episodes star names like husband-and-wife team Bodhi and Jenna Elfman. The actors voice "A Beautiful Spell." It's about a married couple with their own secrets.

Other episodes include "Upper West Blues: A Black Cat Murder Mystery." This is a murder mystery set in an Upper West Side apartment building. It is a cozy murder story with a modern sensibility. Secrets, Crimes & Audiotape also has what they call the "first-ever podcast musical" episodes. "Wait Wait Don't Kill Me" is about Sarah Koenig. She is the public radio staffer who came up with the idea to do the Serial true crime podcast.

Fans of good storytelling may enjoy the Secrets, Crimes & Audiotape podcast. Fans of this show may also like Radio Drama Revival, Rheinstrom's other podcast.
