Episode 48: Social Mobility – what jobs did your parents have when you were 14? Kevin Hogarth, Chief People Officer, KPMG UK

How HR Leaders Change the World

29-03-2022 • 38 mins

I’m KPMG alumni, and so creating this episode with Kevin was extra special for me!

In taking a trip down memory lane I enjoyed thinking about how much has changed in the last 20 years and reflecting on many positive shifts in how business operates, for people and society.

Kevin describes his passion for improving social mobility and shares approaches and learnings at KPMG, including the measurement model and data collection process KPMG developed – based on the job your parents had when you were age 14.

Noting how the phrase “I’m going to work” is becoming outdated, Kevin discusses the fundamental change work is going through and the huge opportunity this creates for HR, and for society.

Kevin advocates setting stretching goals; for the impact of publicly stating goals, knowing that they may not be achieved - but that this is okay, because even so we make progress and push ourselves and our organisations.

Here’s a snapshot of a few things we talked about:

[4:30] The impact of stretching targets and what to do when you don’t meet them.

[11:35] The privilege of working in HR in this new age of work

[13:50] Valuing output not input, and connecting with outcomes

[19:52] Social mobility: what jobs did your parents have when you were 14? KPMG’s approach to measurement and the resulting goals.

[31:30] The success of talent programs in inclusion strategy

[34:40] Setting an ambitious goal, allowing time and measuring
