Our Editor's Take

The Crime Weekly podcast is an ideal listen for true crime fans. From serial killers to cults, the hosts discuss the cases that have affected them most. Along with each week's episode examining a different case, this podcast focuses on helping listeners stay safe and alert.

Hosting this true crime podcast are two people who have dedicated their lives to true crime. Derrick Levasseur is a former police detective and private investigator. Stephanie Harlow has her own YouTube channel examining some chilling crimes. Each host has cases that have influenced their career and life. Together, they discuss these cases and their untold aspects. They also discuss developing cases that are in the news.

Listeners will hear their thoughts about the mysterious Delphi murders. They will listen as they examine the murder of British real estate agent Suzy Lamplugh. They discuss famous cases like the Watts family murders and Casey Anthony. But the hosts do more than examine cases that listeners will already be familiar with. They also focus on cases that have not received much media coverage. Victims like Faith Hedgepeth and Lilliana Carillo are the focus of some episodes.

The hosts do a great job of not sensationalizing these horrible crimes. They also don't focus on the psychopaths responsible for them. Instead of focusing on killers like Ted Bundy, they focus on the victims and their stories. Although these episodes contain sensitive subject matter, they are respectful and professional. Further elevating the episodes are Levasseur's insights as a retired police detective.

These episodes are often more than two parts long. They can even feel like listening to a documentary rather than a podcast. New episodes are available every Friday and are from two to three hours long. The Crime Weekly podcast is a great listen for anyone who enjoys true crime podcasts.

S3 Ep200: The Menendez Brothers: Natural Selection (Part 1)
Beverly Hills, located just southwest of the Hollywood Hills, was and still is a place that the rich, famous and glamorous choose to make their homes. Known for its opulence and luxury, the homes in Beverly Hills are some of the most expensive in the United States, with some properties worth tens of millions of dollars. But behind the country clubs, cocktail hours and shopping trips, there was something much darker brewing in a high end Beverly Hills neighborhood. On August 20th, 1989, business executive Jose Menendez and his wife Kitty were brutally murdered while sitting in the living room of their sprawling Mediterranean style mansion, and what seemingly made this tragedy worse was the fact that their two son’s, Lyle and Erik, were the ones to make the gruesome discovery of their bodies. Suddenly orphaned, the Menendez brothers were initially looked at with sympathy, but soon they would be on trial for the murder of their parents. Lyle and Erik didn’t deny that they had taken their parents' lives, but according to them it was because they were scared and broken down after a lifetime of abuse. At the time, most people believed this was a fabricated excuse, and the prosecution gave greed and money as the true motive. A tragedy and trial played out for the world on television, ending with both Erik and Lyle confined at the Richard Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego for life, with no chance of parole. Recently, newly discovered evidence and testimony has raised questions of whether Erik and Lyle were being honest about the constant state of stress and fear their parents forced them to live under. S3 Ep198: Leah Roberts: Desolation Peak (Part 2)
Leah Roberts was five foot, three inches with short dark hair and a beauty mark above the right side of her lips. Leah’s life took a pretty standard path, starting with a happy childhood in Durham, North Carolina where she lived with her parents and two older siblings, sister Kara and brother Heath, until she began attending college at North Carolina State University in nearby Raleigh. Because of unexpected events and tragedies, Leah would change direction in her early 20’s and begin a journey of self exploration that would take her on an impromptu road trip. On March 9th, 2000, Leah Roberts left her Durham, North Carolina and began driving West. Nine days later, her white Jeep Cherokee was found wrecked and abandoned at the base of the Cascade Mountains, 80 miles north of Seattle, Washington. Leah was not inside the Jeep, and to this day she still has not been found, but a later examination of the vehicle would show the engine had been tampered with and maybe someone had targeted Leah Roberts as she was out in the world, trying to find herself. S3 Ep194: Riley Strain: A Nashville Tragedy
22-year-old Riley Strain was a college student at the University of Missouri where he majored in business and finance while holding an internship at Northern Mutual where he planned to work after college. In March of 2024, Riley and his Delta Chi fraternity brothers took a trip to Nashville, Tennessee for their annual Spring trip. The group arrived on a bus from Columbia on Friday, and that evening they all went out, enjoying Nashville’s colorful entertainment district. The night started with all the friends together, but at around 9:45 PM, Riley was kicked out of the bar they had been drinking at, and he left the establishment alone, telling his friends he was headed back to the hotel. Riley’s fraternity brothers never saw him again, and his disappearance sparked a very publicized search that would end in tragedy. S3 Ep192: Piketon Massacre: And Then There Was One (Part 5)

S3 Ep192: Piketon Massacre: And Then There Was One (Part 5)
Piketon is a small town in Southern Ohio, 90 miles east of Cincinnati with a population of just over 2000 people. It’s a salt-of-the-earth type of place, nestled in the heart of Appalachia, where many families can trace their lineage back generations. Everyone knows everyone, no one is a stranger, and when someone is in need all they have to do is turn to their neighbor. Bad things happen everywhere, even in small, tight-knit towns, but in April of 2016 something happened that no one had ever seen before, and it shook them to their core. Eight members of one family, in four separate locations, all murdered execution-style at the same time; it was a crime that most people only experience through movies, but the members of this quiet, hardworking town would soon find themselves thrust into the national spotlight, unwillingly living through a real life murder mystery and mourning a family who had been a fixture in the community. S3 Ep182: Dan Markel: What Did You Do Donna Sue? (Part 8)
In July of 2014, Florida State University professor Dan Markel dropped his two young sons off to preschool and made a quick stop at the gym before heading to his home in Tallahassee, Florida. Within minutes of arriving home, Dan Markel was shot execution style in his garage. In the aftermath, a lengthy investigation would follow that would include financial and phone records, surveillance cameras, wiretaps and a FBI sting operation, and what this investigation would uncover would shock everyone. In the case there have already been three criminal trials, four murder convictions and a fifth arrest, but new details and allegations are emerging every day, suggesting that there may still be more that we do not know about the shocking and tragic murder of 41-year-old Dan Markel.
