A CHILDLESS WORLD

A CHILDLESS WORLD

In November 2022, the earth crossed an important threshold—eight billion inhabitants. Most media focused on overpopulation—when in fact, depopulation is a far more interesting problem. Half of the world’s countries are not creating enough children even to maintain current levels, while some of them seem to have stopped altogether. This is one of the most massive and unexpected phenomena of our time: how modern societies are silently putting themselves on a trajectory of stagnation if not outright extinction. In this podcast, we investigate this trend, and try to understand what it will mean to live in a world without children.   David Duhamel, economics professor at Parsons Paris and adjunct professor at Sciences Po Paris, tells the story of the world to come:  a childless world Production :  MaisonK Prod Original Music : Ben Molinaro Graphism : Anna Toussaint  Main Sources Banque Mondialehttps://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SP.DYN.TFRT.IN Gapminder https://www.gapminder.org (https://www.gapminder.org/) IHME https://www.healthdata.org/ (https://www.healthdata.org/) INED https://www.ined.fr/fr/publications/editions/population-et-societes/ (https://www.ined.fr/fr/publications/editions/population-et-societes/) Our world in Data https://ourworldindata.org/ (https://ourworldindata.org/) Darrel Bricker et John Ibbitson, 2019, Empty Planet, Crown, New York Yves Charbit et Maryse Gaimard, 2015, La bombe démographique en question, PUF Danny Dorling and Stuart Gietel-Basten, 2018, Why Demography Matters, Polity Charles Goodheart et Manoj Pradhan, 2020, The Great Demographic Reversal. 6 - Is South Korea disappearing?
South Koreans are not having children anymore… at all. Zero. or 0.79 per woman which is about the same. The youth is called the “Sampo” generation. The generation that gave up three times. In this episode I talk with Minyoung, a former student from Korea as we explain why Korean universities dispense dating classes and why suicide is now the leading cause of death among the young. South Korea is putting itself on an extinction trajectory. Shouldn’t we be noticing?  A podcast by David Duhamel produced by MaisonK Prod Original music: Ben Molinaro Graphic design: Anna Toussaint Sources On Global students ranking http://www.oecd.org/pisa/keyfindings/PISA-2012-results-overview-FR.pdf"> http://www.oecd.org/pisa/keyfindings/PISA-2012-results-overview-FR.pdf On dating classes https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/dongguk-university-course-marriage-love-dating-mandatory-1.4532780">https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/dongguk-university-course-marriage-love-dating-mandatory-1.4532780 On celibacy rates https://edition.cnn.com/2019/08/29/asia/south-korea-fertility-intl-hnk-trnd/index.html">https://edition.cnn.com/2019/08/29/asia/south-korea-fertility-intl-hnk-trnd/index.html On advices given to future mothers https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/11/dont-look-dishevelled-anger-over-seoul-citys-advice-to-pregnant-women">https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/11/dont-look-dishevelled-anger-over-seoul-citys-advice-to-pregnant-women Hosted by Ausha.
