Learn Portuguese with teacher Rafael and his student Ava. Each lesson is like going for a coffee with your friend who happens to speak Portuguese and is helping you learn in a relaxed, enjoyable way.
Coffee Break Portuguese does not focus on European or Brazilian Portuguese specifically: instead you'll be learning to use Portuguese in a way you'll be understood throughout the Portuguese-speaking world. Rafael, our main teacher, is from Brazil, but you'll also get to know Catarina from Portugal in our episodes.
Coffee Break Portuguese is not a simple series of "listen and repeat" audio programmes: in each lesson Rafael explains how the language works, helping Ava - and you - to manipulate the language and use it in practical situations. As a learner Ava asks questions, and makes mistakes, so through Rafael's explanations, corrections and pronunciation tips you'll build your confidence and begin to understand and speak the language.
You'll also build your cultural knowledge with the help of our cultural correspondent Catarina who shares information on cultural and linguistic points from around the Portuguese-speaking world.
In the same time it takes you to sit down and enjoy a coffee in your favourite coffee shop, you can make progress with your Portuguese. Our 20 minute lessons are perfect to keep you focused and let you develop your confidence in regular sessions.

Coffee Break Portuguese is a podcast for beginner learners of Portuguese. The hosts of the show are Rafael and Ava. The former is a teacher, and Ava is his student. Catarina drops in for quick cultural explanations. Rafael and Catarina are both native speakers. The program is the companion to the language-learning course of the same name.
There are over 250 million speakers of Portuguese in the world. Most of them live in Portugal and Brazil. A few are in Angola, Mozambique, and other parts of Africa. There are also small lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) communities in Japan and East Timor. Portuguese is close to Spanish and other Romance languages. Plus, it's a lilting and musical language and is pleasing to the ear. These are a few reasons why people decide to learn Portuguese. No matter the motivation, this podcast is a great tool for new learners.
Throughout a number of podcast episodes, Rafael goes over the language basics with Ava. From the beginning, the content has real-life applications. In the first lesson, Ava learns to say hello and goodbye and how to ask people how they are. Catarina explains differences in pronunciations between European Portuguese and Brazilian.
By the end of the series, Ava learns how to get around using public transportation. In between, Rafael teaches common concepts like numbers, family members, and directional words. These are in the context of actions a visitor might perform. For example, Ava practices ordering food from a restaurant. She checks into a hotel and starts a conversation with a local.
Ava is an enthusiastic learner, asking many clarifying questions during each lesson. Rafael's instruction is clear and thorough, with many opportunities for repetition and practice. Catarina's Cafezinho" segments offer valuable bits of cultural information. Beginning learners might find plenty to love about this Portuguese podcast. Those considering a course may find the show a good first step.
New episodes of Coffee Break Portuguese air a few times a week.
