When Yudhishthira was spending his time in exile with his brothers and Draupadi after losing everything in gambling with the Kauravas, then one day sage Brihadashva came there. Yudhishthira, after giving due hospitality to the sage, said to him, "Maharaj! Who would be more unfortunate than me in this world, who lost everything in gambling and is now wandering here with his family in the forest." To this, Maharishi Brihadashva said, "Dharmaraj! It is not so. I will tell you the story of King Nala."

Maharishi Brihadashva has tried to present here the same saga that narrated to Yudhishthira about the love and separation of King Nal and Damayanti.
