Our Editor's Take

The First Degree podcast combines true crime, friendship, and ginger jokes. The program's title has two meanings. The idea of the show was to talk to people who had a first-degree connection to a notorious crime. First degree is also a term used to describe a crime.

Jac Vanek, Alexis Linkletter, and Billy Jensen host The First Degree podcast. Jac was one of the first-ever bloggers, and she also created the LadyGang podcast. Alexis and Billy are true crime writers and TV producers.

The First Degree podcast debuted in 2018. One of the first episodes talked about Jac's one degree of separation from the Nanette Johnson love triangle. Some cases talk to crime victims, or those who survived a mass killing. Like a woman named Sarah, who went to the school where killer Clay Shrout took classmates hostage. She tells her story on the show.

The crimes discussed on The First Degree podcast are pretty harrowing. Murder, kidnapping, rape, and child molestation are frequent topics. One episode focused on Dwaine Tinsley, a cartoonist for Hustler. Tinsley did his column under the name Chester the Molester. And the artist lived up to that name by molesting his daughter Allison. The hosts talked to the daughter and interviewed her about what she went through.

Once a week, the three hosts do something a little lighter than The First Degree podcast. Killing Time is a show within the show. These humorous, meandering episodes talk a little about crime and a lot about pop culture. (Jac, Alexis, and Billy refer to themselves as two girls and a ginger in those episodes.) Past episodes talk about books that inspired real crimes, New Year's Eve, makeup, and Joan of Arc. The show's subjects are unpredictable, but the hosts' chemistry is real. Most weeks have one traditional episode and one bonus episode.
