Our Editor's Take

Dead End: A New Jersey Political Murder Mystery is a good listen for any true crime podcast series fan. In eight intense episodes, it examines the mystery of the Sheridan murders.

The podcast addresses how, in 2014, the local New Jersey politics world woke up to shocking news about the murder of one of their own. John Sheridan was the former state transportation commissioner. He and his wife, Joyce Sheridan, were fixtures in the New Jersey political and social scene.

True crime podcast fans might be hearing actual developments unfold in real time. Dead End: A New Jersey Political Murder Mystery opens with the episode "Meet the Sheridans." This episode introduces the show's key characters. Former Governor Christine Todd Whitman is one of these characters. John's friend John Farmer, a political researcher from Rutgers University, is also introduced. The podcast episode also features Chris Stevens, Joyce Sheridan's best friend.

Peter Sheridan is John's younger brother. He's also an active Trenton federal judge. The Sheridan brothers were a formidable presence in local politics. There are plenty more big names in the local New Jersey political scene introduced in the series.

The podcast also reveals that, according to official findings, it was a murder-suicide. John allegedly stabbed Joyce before setting their bedroom on fire. But was this all there was to it? Was the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office correct?

The couple's eldest son, Mark Sheridan, isn't satisfied with these findings. For him, it was obvious that they did not investigate it well. That's why he was glad that WNYC came up with Dead End: A New Jersey Political Murder Mystery. It highlighted the crucial gaps he felt were lacking from the initial findings.

In June 2022, the NJ Office of Attorney General confirmed they would investigate the case. Mark believes this decision was due in part to the podcast.

Dead End: A New Jersey Political Murder Mystery is a podcast that shows evident flaws in the criminal justice system. If an influential family like the Sheridans can't get justice, how can regular citizens? The Sheridans now have a chance for justice, thanks to this podcast.
