Our Editor's Take

The host of Owning It: The Anxiety Podcast had stress-related issues her entire life. As a child, people referred to it as having a "dicky tummy." This was especially true in Caroline Foran's case, as her mental struggles gave her IBS symptoms.

After a lot of therapy, learning coping methods, and self-acceptance, Foran was able to finally manage her illness. She shared her recovery in the book Owning It: Your Bullsh*t-Free Guide to Living with Anxiety. Her follow-up, The Confidence Kit, talked about handling fear. She also became a public speaker about the topic. Owning It: The Anxiety Podcast is another way for her to share her journey and coping strategies.

Foran had found ways to handle her condition. She avoided long travel and chose to attend a college that was a ten-minute walk from home. Everything seemed manageable as long as Foran made no big life decisions. But at 25, she realized she no longer had control.

The podcast host's anxiety came back into her life at a time when everything seemed to be going great. Foran formed a career as a regarded journalist and got an editor position in Lovin' Dublin. She was also moving in with her boyfriend. But the combination of the two made Foran's stomach issues come back. She also started experiencing panic attacks. It was so bad that she had to resign from her dream role. For the first time, Foran realized this was a mental health issue she couldn't fix alone.

Foran welcomes a new expert to the podcast every week. Those include therapists, psychologists, neuroscientists, and more. They discuss the different manifestations of anxiety and how to manage them. For instance, they explore stress related to fertility, separation, or the climate crisis. The conversations are caring and compassionate, seeking to provide listeners with comfort. However, this show is not a substitute for seeing a real-life mental health professional. Episodes of Owning It are about an hour long.

Parental Anxiety: 'Does my child need an assessment?'

Parental Anxiety: 'Does my child need an assessment?'
On this episode, the final of this season, I am joined by clinical psychologist Dr Claire Conlon (The Caterpillar Clinic) for a very specific conversation that I hope will be useful for those among you who are parents. This mirrors my own current experience, and my last year and a half. It's about the overwhelming anxiety you can carry as a parent when you're worried about your child and the ways in which they appear to be struggling, when you're not sure what or if something is at play for them, where to go to for support and wondering if it's something that will just pass with time or if it's something you need to look into. We also talk about the problem with self-blame and the importance of regulating yourself as a parent. I draw on my own experience a lot for this. I hope you find this episode reassuring and helpful and I'll be back very soon for a brand news season. If you are looking for more information on things like cost and exactly what to expect from a private psychological asssessment for your child, I'm including the link to my article here: https://carolineforan.substack.com/p/whats-involved-in-having-your-child Get 20% off my Substack. I am joined here by award winning bestselling author and columnist Sophie White. Sophie shares her story with me, the pivotal moment at the age of 22 that changed everything, the diagnosis of bipolar II she would later receive, the anxiety of needing psychiatric care versus what it was really like and how she eventually began to own her mental illness. I want to include a trigger warning (TW) here as Sophie does discuss a particularly tough point of suicidal ideation that she reached in her mid 20s. Now a mother of three and an incredibly successful writer, I hope that Sophie's story gives reassurance to those struggling with mental illness, whether or not it is bipolar or just more chronic anxiety as was the case for me, that it won't always define you or be all that you do. There's so much to discuss with Sophie, we decided towards the end to make this a two parter. So this first episode is Sophie's story right up until she got a handle on things and we will follow up in a few short weeks with how her story continued when she became a parent, an experience which for many of us can be fraught with anxiety in itself. Thank you for listening and please, if you like the series, hop on over to my substack where we can connect on a more personal level and get more useful content delivered to your inbox. you'll find me at carolineforan.substack.com and the newsletter is called Own It. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. Living with ADHD, Bipolar + Anxiety: Matilda's Inspiring Story

Living with ADHD, Bipolar + Anxiety: Matilda's Inspiring Story
If you're loving this series, do me a favour and hop on over to my substack and click subscribe. There I'll be writing lots more in depth content, with a huge focus on anxiety of course, as well as my parenting experience and some career stuff too. This week's episode is just so wonderful, had I been able to listen to this story when I was in my teenage years or early twenties, I know it would have made a massive difference in helping me feel less alone, and more confident about the challenges I was facing, that so many of us face. Matilda Heindow, you may know her on instagram as Crazy Head Comics, is my wonderful guest. She shares her story of growing up with ADHD, bipolar, anxiety and depression and, after a string of traumatic experiences that nobody should ever have had to endure, let alone endure within one year at the age of 17, she became ill with PTSD. It's hard to listen to at points, but believe me when I say Matilda is so incredibly inspiring, so wise and as she says herself she is now living her best life. She's channelled all of her struggles into the hugely popular Crazy Head Comics account, with well over half a million followers, and her new brilliant book The Art of feeling Better, which is out now. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. How I overcame my anxiety around travelling

How I overcame my anxiety around travelling
Subscribe to my substack HERE. Sign up to Owning It: Real Time to help with your travel anxiety while en route HERE. Brought to you in partnership with British Airways Holidays, this solo episode explores my experience of travel anxiety. It's something that held me back from getting on a flight for such a long time and it meant I missed out on a huge amount of formative experiences. Eventually, I worked through it with some mindset shifts laid out in this episode and other coping mechanisms, leading to once-in-a-lifetime trips to Thailand and Japan. Part of managing travel anxiety, be it the kind I experienced or the general stresses that surround travel, for example when holidaying with children, is booking with the right provider. British Airways Holidays are making it so much easier to enjoy your holidays without the stress. All their holidays are ATOL protected, they offer a 24hr helpline should you need them when you’re away and allow you to book with a low deposit. You can enjoy flexible payments until you fly*, and can even use Avios points towards your holiday too! Plus, all their holidays include a 23kg baggage allowance per person, so no surprises when you book. If this episode inspires you to take your holidays more seriously you can head to Ba.com/holidays. * Full balance due four weeks before departure for short haul or seven weeks for all other holiday bookings.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. 'How holding my breath taught me to live': how this free diver manages anxiety

'How holding my breath taught me to live': how this free diver manages anxiety
Sign up to Owning It: Real Time HERE. Subscribe to my brand new Substack HERE. This week I am joined by Claire Walsh, bestselling author and free diver. Having watched The Deepest Breath on Netflix, I realised how much we can differ when it comes to finding the thing that helps to downregulate our stress response. For many people, the idea of plunging down into the darkest depths of the sea, in one single breath, without all the breathing paraphernalia would be enough to send them into a state of panic. It is certainly not for everyone and it requires major training and experience and it's high risk but for those who describe themselves as free divers, this activity can be how they manage their stress and anxiety. Here, Irish free diver Claire tells her story and what she's learned from holding her breath in the water which she can apply to her life on dry land. PS: I've recently launched a substack where I'm sharing a weekly column. Anxiety will be a regular theme but there'll also be discussions about parenting and work and relationships, such as how I've managed to build a reliable revenue stream from podcasting. You can sign up at carolineforan.substack.com Some content is free to read but you can pay the price of a fancy coffee per month to read the juicier stuff. For now, enjoy this episode. Buy Claire's book HERE.
