A Toast to Allyship: Finding Community with Bourbon

A Toast to Allyship: Finding Community with Bourbon
Content Warning: This episode features controversial language from an individual who is still growing in their LGBTQ allyship journey. We are choosing not to alter his words. Part of what we do on SQ is have hard, honest conversations and that means not policing guests’ language if they are sincerely trying to be supportive of the LGBTQ+ community. Y’all we move beyond our queer echo chamber and talk to an actual straight, white, male. Randy Sullivan of Bourbon Real Talk chats with India about growing beyond ingrained homophobia, becoming an ally, and using bourbon as a common ground to build diverse communities. Honestly, Aubree knows nothing about bourbon, so after listening to this she did what she always does, and found a book on the subject. We recommend: The Bourbon Bible, and it is entirely possible that Alyson is getting this queer bourbon shirt for her birthday.*  If you want to learn more about Bourbon Real Talk you can visit their: YouTube Podcast Instagram   Show Contact and Social Media Show Website: Southern QueeriesEmail: southernqueeriespod@gmail.com.FacebookTwitterInstagramYouTube   Support the Show  PayPalBuy us a coffee: Kofi - https://bit.ly/3EtRG3kShop our Bookshop Store* featuring southern authors and writing.Take our Show Survey   Hosts Social Media India Bastien on Instagram Aubree Calvin on Twitter Aubree Calvin on Instagram *Southern Queeries participates in the Amazon and Bookshop affiliate programs. Queer Culture in Mexico with Mila Villasana

Queer Culture in Mexico with Mila Villasana
We talk to one of India’s best friends, Mila Villasana, a freelance Mexican illustrator and designer. These long time friends talk about finding their queer identities and how it intersects with their Mexican identities, developing a sense of community, growing up in Mexico, and the country’s shifting LGBTQ culture. Yes, Aubree’s here too, but it is mainly a sweet catch up between two friends! You can see some of Mila’s work on Instagram at @misskiwifish. To learn more about Mexican lesbian culture, we’d like to recommend: Tortilleras Negotiating Intimacy: Love, Friendship, and Sex in Queer Mexico City by Anahi Russo Garrido -https://amzn.to/3kaTxSL and the new book, Wild Hearts Can’t Be Tamed: 15 Voices from the Latinx Diaspora https://amzn.to/3q9HbhM, both are available on Amazon and our Bookshop.org page*.   And here’s the reference to the history of the lesbian flag that the Queer Godmother mentioned in the conversation: https://www.nonchalantmagazine.com/the-full-history-of-the-lesbian-flag/  Show Contact and Social Media Show Website: Southern QueriesEmail: southernqueeriespod@gmail.com.FacebookTwitterInstagram Support the Show  PayPalBuy us a coffee: Ko-fi Shop our Bookshop Store featuring southern authors and writing.Take our Show Survey Host Social Media India Bastien on Instagram Aubree Calvin on Twitter Aubree Calvin on Instagram   *Southern Queeries is an Amazon Affiliate. Queerly I Do: Part 6: Maybe I Don't?

Queerly I Do: Part 6: Maybe I Don't?
Our “Queerly I Do” series is our look at what is going on in the world of gay marriage or LGBTQ weddings, with a southern twist. Why did the queer community push so hard for marriage in the first place, were there other fights we should have been focusing on, and should LGBTQ people participate in such a cis/straight institution in the first place?  In our last episode of the series we talk to Dr. Mary Bernstein, Professor of Sociology at the University of Connecticut. She is an expert on LGBTQ social movements, as well as movement intersectionality on issues of race, gender identity, and sexual orientation, and gun violence prevention advocacy. Mary was a joy for Aubree to talk to and we greatly appreciate her time.  Find out more about Prof. Bernstein here:  https://sociology.uconn.edu/person/mary-bernstein That’s it for our Wedding series. We’ll be back soon with more interviews with other great people LGBTQ people in the south. In the meantime, we want to know what you think about the show. Queerly I Do: Part 3: Southern Political Resistance to Same Sex Marriage
Our “Queerly I Do” series is our look at what is going on in the world of gay marriage or LGBTQ weddings, with a southern twist. This episode we talk a little about the politics of same-sex marriage, including the history of how southern states legislatures tried to prevent queer marriage from taking place. Our special guest is Mr. Greg Bourke. He, and his husband, Michael De Leon, were the lead plaintiffs in the Kentucky federal case that was a part of the  historic Obergefell v. Hodges case. We’d like to give a special thanks to Greg Bourke for talking to us. His book, Gay, Catholic, and American: My Legal Battle for Marriage Equality and Inclusion, available for pre-order now.
