Despite losing his arm in combat, he continues to embrace life’s challenges and thrive in adversity. On July 20, 2005, Rich sustained injuries from an IED (improvised explosive device) attack that resulted in the amputation of his left arm, and the Army forced him to retire. Not one to back down from a fight, he was relentless in pursuing his dream of leading men and women in combat as an officer. Working with military leaders and government legislators, policy was changed to allow amputees to commission as officers, and Rich was the first, commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in December 2008.
