EP21 | Chasing Dreams & A Better Life: Chinese Migrants at the Southern Border
Since last year, over 24,000 Chinese migrants have made the journey into the US through Mexico. With limited capacity to assist Chinese migrants in-language, humanitarian organizations in San Diego reached out to CAA to request support for the influx of new arrivals. This request led to our second trip to San Diego this March after our initial visit in December 2023. This time, resources are even scarcer due to the closure of the San Diego Migrant Welcome Center, leaving migrants stranded at a remote Transit Center, where reuniting with their families proves to be a daunting challenge. From March 12 to 14, our CAA team provided direct assistance to approximately 400 migrants each day. We also spoke to several Chinese migrants, delving into their motivations for undertaking perilous journeys to the US, even at the risk of their own lives. As immigrants ourselves, we listen to their stories with empathy, aiming to offer a deeper understanding beyond the mainstream media narrative. Discover the dreams and aspirations that drive these courageous individuals, as they strive for a better life and chase the American dream, just like many of us.

Episode 19|Youth Safety & Mental Health Support
Together with our community partners, Chinese for Affirmative Action hosted a town hall in March this year to address the recent spike in school safety incidents. This episode further explored the mental health and academic challenges among immigrant children in the post-covid world. You will first hear from Mr Li, a family liaison at MLK Middle School. Leveraging his extensive experiences working with Chinese-speaking immigrant families, he shed lights on the devastating impact of covid on students’ academic performance and emotional growth. This impact is exacerbated by students’ frequent engagement with social media and other online activities. Subsequently, Ah Yee shared her lived experiences as an immigrant parent, delving into the common barriers that immigrant children and their parents, who often spoke limited English, encountered while navigating the school system. Through sharing her journey, Ah Yee hoped to encourage all immigrant parents to actively participate in their children’s education and to create a safer and supportive environment for immigrant youth to thrive.
Episode 18|Defend SF Sanctuary!
06-06-2023
Episode 18|Defend SF Sanctuary!
With a focus on San Francisco's Sanctuary Ordinance, this episode looks into its vital role in upholding the values of equality and inclusion and protecting our immigrant communities from Immigration & Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) racial profiling and abuse of power since 1989. In recent years, our City’s sanctuary policies have come under attack with an attempt to recycle the war on drugs and scapegoating immigrants for the drug crisis. In this episode, you will hear from Angela Chan, Chief of Policy at the SF Public Defender's Office, who shared her experience as a staff attorney at the Asian Law Caucus and witnessed hundreds of immigrant youth being handed over to ICE in 2008. This experience drove her to form the Free SF Coalition, which has successfully pushed for the passing of three local laws to strengthen sanctuary policies. We then speak with Anny, an outreach specialist at CAA, to learn about how the attack on Sanctuary Ordinance has instilled fear among Chinese immigrant communities and her participation in a grassroots movement to defend sanctuary.

Episode 17|Untold Migrant Story: an Undocumented Immigrant from Hong Kong
Undocumented immigrants are part of our AAPI communities with around 19,000 DACA recipients coming from Asia. Despite having more than 120,000 Asian youth eligible for DACA status, many are discouraged to come forward and apply for the program. This is in part due to misunderstanding and prejudice against undocumented immigrants among our communities. Our guest today is Yudy, an immigrant from Hong Kong who came to the US alone at age 17 for high school and became undocumented. From overcoming barriers and risk of deportation to pursuing her dream of becoming a nurse, Yudy shares her courageous journey of being undocumented for the past 20 years. Her extraordinary story re-defines what it means to be American and serves to uplift immigrant community voices.

Episode 11 | Preserving Cantonese Language and Culture in San Francisco
想了解更多「拯救廣東話課程」行動的資訊,請瀏覽以下網址: https://www.savecantonese.org/blog/save-cantonese-ccsf https://www.instagram.com/savecantonese_ccsf/ San Francisco has long been an immigrant gateway city for Asian immigrants, particularly for Chinese immigrants. Today, more than 20% of the City’s population is of Chinese descent and Chinese is spoken by more than 18% of residents. Despite the history and strong presence of Chinese Americans, the community has struggled to preserve Cantonese, a language that is widely-spoken by the local Chinese community. In this episode, we invited Professor Grace Yu, a Cantonese language instructor at the City College of San Francisco, as well as Chester Leung and Julia Quon, two student organizers from the Save Cantonese at CCSF campaign. They share about the history of the Cantonese language program at CCSF, their own personal experiences of learning Cantonese, why the Cantonese program is important, and how others can support the campaign to save Cantonese. Over the last two years, the state of the Covid-19 pandemic has shifted as we experienced multiple surges, new variants, and changing public health recommendations. Episode 8 | Immigrant Stories: Dreams of a Chinese Undocumented Youth
Immigration is often seen as simply an increasingly partisan topic of debate in politics or news, but immigration is also felt on a deeply personal level in individual lives. Beyond the halls of Congress, where talks are ongoing to push for immigration reform, our communities must live with the day-to-day struggles of immigrant families. This episode is the second of our two part series focusing on the undocumented Chinese American community, which is often overlooked and made invisible in national conversations surrounding immigration. In this episode, Ru, a member of the New York based AAPI undocumented youth group RAISE, shares her personal migration story and lived experiences as an undocumented youth growing up in the US. This episode is in Mandarin.

Given that over 60% of the Chinese population in the United States is foreign-born, immigration policy is an issue which greatly affects the Chinese American community. In this two-episode series, we will feature two Chinese youth experiences of being undocumented immigrants. In this episode, we invited Jeff, a member of the undocumented AAPI youth group RAISE, to share his immigration story and how being undocumented has impacted his life experiences. Episode 3: Responding to Anti-Asian Racism and Community Safety
In the past few months, incidents of anti-Asian racism and violence have received widespread media coverage across the country. Stop AAPI Hate, of which CAA is a founding member, documented almost 3,800 anti-Asian hate incidents from March 2020 to February 2021. In April’s audio workshop, we talked with two guest speakers who work on the issue of community safety and justice. Eddy Zheng, CAA Board Member and Founder of the New Breath Foundation, talks about how his personal experiences have shaped his perspectives on how to address the root causes of violence and facilitate community safety. Sarah Wan, Executive Director of Community Youth Center, shares about her work on safety initiatives and victim support services for community members in San Francisco.
