Corby Left The Mic On

Corby Stephens

Have you ever noticed that sometimes the best stuff happens when you aren't trying, when the mic is off? If the mic is left on, sometimes you capture those moments. That's the idea behind this podcast. Capturing the thoughts and conversations you would have when you aren't trying to be on.

The format of this podcast will be both interviews and the occasional monolog about a project I'm working on with the intent of helping others learn from my mistakes and successes.

Also, in the bucket list category, with everyone on lock down, my bucket list includes interviewing people of note who have been successful in my areas of interest. Not because they are famous, though that doesn't hurt, but because I think there is more to their story than typically comes out. That's what I'm after.

Related blog post: https://blog.corbystephens.com/podcast/rating-the-opening-fanfare-of-all-of-the-star-wars-movies-episodes-1-9 Welcome to the first of what will be many episodes where my two 20-something sons and I talk about our mutual love of Star Wars. If you aren’t into Star Wars, movie soundtracks, music theory and composition, then this episode of Corby Left The Mic On might not be for you. But it might be for someone you know, so please share this on your social media anyway! This episode needs some setting up because it involves not just Star Wars nerdery, but musical nerdery. See, both my wife and I are musical. We both have musical dad’s. Both of our sons are musical. They participated in musical theater, they play a variety of instruments, son #1 has been on a record and son #2 is getting his Masters in Music Education. Classical, jazz, rock, you name it. We all especially love movie soundtracks. Add to this our love of all things Star Wars, and you get the overly analytical and sometimes judgy-sounding conversation dissecting the opening fanfare of all nine Star Wars movies that you are about to hear. We really aren’t as cynical as we might sound from time to time, we just really love Star Wars and music a lot. The sound might be a little inconsistent because we were in my living room on the couch at two different mics and we weren’t always as close as we should have been. Also, I mention that the soundtracks you can hear on Spotify are different than the ones on Disney+ which may or may not be true. In either case, what I did was plug my laptop into our sound system and recorded the same thing that we heard in the living room, and I overlaid that recording on top of the parts when we are listening to the movies, so you are hearing the same thing we are hearing. Sometimes we stopped and started the music. I didn’t try to match all of that up, just the longer parts. And there was a break in the middle so if there seems like an interruption in the conversation, that’s why.

Corby Left The Mic On? What does that even mean? What is this podcast? Some of the best conversations, the funniest moments, the good stuff, happens, when the mic is not on. When only you and a couple of other people are involved. Almost like it’s behind the scenes of your life. To me, the best stuff happens behind the scenes of both life and entertainment. When it’s our turn to talk, those are the stories, the jokes, the moments we tend share with others. Think about it this way. I love DVD commentaries. I love to hear how things were made. I love to hear the stories that happened around the making of the things I enjoy. Life is like a movie. I want to share my own behind the scenes moments that will hopefully benefit others. I want to share conversations about topics I’m interested in with people I know well or maybe even don’t know at all.  You can expect to hear me and my adults sons talk about our love of Star Wars and sci-fi and fantasy in general. You can expect to hear audio versions of blog posts I’ve written on doing VoiceOver, podcasting, and technology. I also hope to interview people I admire, and find out more than just “fan-boy” level stuff. I don’t expect to get their deepest secrets or become their best friend, but I know they have more to offer the just, “What was it like making the thing you are most famous for?” My name is Corby, and I want to leave the mic on in order to capture both the silly and the significant, the interesting-to-me and maybe interesting-to-others, the life lessons from the known and the unknown people around us. The mic is on. Let’s talk.
