Colour Space, Calibration, Skin Tones and Camera Image Style by a Dummy for Beginners.
It's been a while! June was a busy one for me so had to take a break for a bit. As I was doing my monitor calibration last week I thought it would make an interesting video/podcast talking about how and why cameras and screens translate colours and why we need to make corrections. I'm no expert but know enough to get by so I'm hoping this is useful for those who are stating out and wondering why their images don't look accurate or correct when displayed on different screens and printers. Here's some links to the reference material I use, the equipment I use and where to get them. https://petapixel.com/2013/03/23/exploring-the-world-of-color-theory-with-a-3d-modeling-program/ https://calibrite.com/product/colorchecker-classic/ https://spyderx.datacolor.com/shop-products/image-capturing/ https://colorconfidence.com/products/calibrite-colorchecker-display https://www.xrite.com/categories/formulation-and-quality-assurance-software/i1profiler https://www.viewsonic.com/uk/products/lcd/VP2785-4K Next one will be back to normal and talking about more art theory and practice, once I've had chance to do some proper research. Thanks again to everyone who's been listening and getting in contact, blows my mind everything that people decide to listen to my ramblings. Fake News? The Story of Migrant Mother and How it Was Changed.

Fake News? The Story of Migrant Mother and How it Was Changed.
Hi everyone! Thank you once again for the amazing engagement and support you've been offering, we're still a small group but I'm so appreciative to everyone who has watched and subscribed to my channel. This week I'm talking about the story of Migrant Mother and how it was manipulated in order to provide a story which the editor and creator felt was more engaging. You could call it 'Fake News', but was this a purposeful change or a mere mixup of details by the photographer? And in the case of Migrant Mother, did the ends justify the means when it meant that the New Deal institutes of the Resettlement Administration and the Last Farm Securities Administration received more funding and support from Congress and the public? Dorothea Lange made a universally acclaimed and iconic image which has remained one of the most influential and recognisable documentary photographs of the 20th century and together we will look at the context surrounding its creation and the Florence Owens Thompsons reaction to it, as well as the reaction from her family. Must Have Books to Improve your Photography!
After a few weeks of burying myself in work and research I’ve finally got round to making a new video & Podcast!   This week we will be talking about improving your art and photography by investing in reading instead of equipment.   These are some of my favourite books and make a great set of introductions to deeper reading and delving into more specific topics over time.   Consider it essential reading for upcoming video topics, hopefully helping you develop as much as they helped me :)   Overall the focus of these works are to help us understand how photography developed, the changes in usage and movements and the practitioners who drove forward the progression of photography as an art medium. There’s so much insight knowledge here about the intent and execution of works as well as how those intentions tied back to their placement in cultural and time.  Here are some links to the books discussed in this video, they are not affiliated so make sure to shop around.   Many can be found for less that £10 including shipping when looking at eBay and other used book stores or charity shops.   Photography: A Cultural History, 5th edition, Marien, W M,  - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1786277859/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_BE0KNENT61F96Q79S20P Ways of Seeing, Berger, J - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/014103579X/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_TYJ215G6F5Y6B09J60AW The Photography Reader, Wells, L - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0415749182/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_D5CXVAY9JAXB3V7TA6K2 Camera Lucida Barthes, R - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0099225417/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_F7WGB4S3174CKTRHNMAR Photography The Key Concepts, Bate, D - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1350107956/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_F6S8T5P39FK0EHAA6RZN The Theatre of the Face, Kozloff, M - https://onlineshop.oxfam.org.uk/the-theatre-of-the-face-portrait-photography-since-1900/product/HD_300746527?pscid=ps_ggl_shopping&gclid=Cj0KCQjwr-SSBhC9ARIsANhzu17WTw-UOWL3Ow5a85RacBTtq9ShSv7hfjKdTRDWdP4clKo7ebkLrKcaAqDSEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds   If you enjoyed this episode you may also enjoy my other work…   Photography    Art Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/harleybainbridge Commercial Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/harleybainbridgephotography Website - https://harleybainbridge.com Linktr.ee - https://linktr.ee/Harleybainbridge ————————————————————————   Podcast    Apple Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/before-the-shutter-with-harley-bainbridge-photography/id1505076540 Google Podcasts - https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8xMTQzNzNiMC9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/7wD3XvzbJTQTCWtlA5y9Xd?si=e5c4e6e8a0914060 —————————————————————————————-   Equipment Used in the Making of This Video   Mic - Elgato Wave:3 Mic Stand - Elgato LP Lights - Elgato KeyLight Air Camera - Sony A7m3 & iPhone 12 Lens - Tamron 28-75mm f.2.8 Laptop - MacBook Pro 16” M1, 2021 ————————————————————   Music   ‘The Thought of You’ courtesy of TrackTribe https://www.youtube.com/c/TrackTribeMusic/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/harleybainbridge/message
Why So Serious? Were Victorians Really Always Miserable?

Why So Serious? Were Victorians Really Always Miserable?
Hi Everyone!   Thank you for all the recent support on my photography videos and podcast!   In this video I'm taking a look at the myth that Victorians were always miserable. Typically we see lots of portrait photographs with the subject looking very wooden and stoic, so I thought I'd share how the use of posing supports, the limited technological ability of cameras, and the conventions of portraiture dictated how the photographs looked. What Makes This Portrait So Iconic? Conventions of Photography How They Give Meaning to an Image
In this episode I'm taking a look at the 2006 portrait of Steve Jobs that has become one of the most iconic photographs of the last 20 years. We'll be discussing why it works so well, what we can understand from what we see and a little about why we shouldn't just copy what Albert Watson did when making this superb photograph.   If you enjoyed this episode you may also enjoy my other work…   Photography    Art Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/harleybainbridge Commercial Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/harleybainbridgephotography Website - https://harleybainbridge.com Linktr.ee - https://linktr.ee/Harleybainbridge ————————————————————————   Podcast    Apple Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/before-the-shutter-with-harley-bainbridge-photography/id1505076540 Google Podcasts - https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8xMTQzNzNiMC9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/7wD3XvzbJTQTCWtlA5y9Xd?si=e5c4e6e8a0914060—————————————————————————————-   Equipment Used in the Making of This Video   Mic - Elgato Wave:3 Mic Stand - Elgato LP Lights - Elgato KeyLight Air Camera - Sony A7m3 & iPhone 12 Lens - Tamron 28-75mm f.2.8 Laptop - MacBook Pro 16” M1, 2021 ————————————————————   Music   ‘The Thought of You’ courtesy of TrackTribe https://www.youtube.com/c/TrackTribeMusic/ #portraitphotography #photography #conventions #arttheory #philosophy #berger #stevejobs #apple #barthes #stuarthall #representation #photographer #portraiture #portrait #photograph #photo #artconventions #apple #pr #photographyquestions #questions --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/harleybainbridge/message
Photography Kit for Early Career Artists & Photographers - Before The Shutter

Photography Kit for Early Career Artists & Photographers - Before The Shutter
Hello Everyone!   Those who know my podcast and channel already will know that the focus of my writing is not on the technological side of photography but the theoretical and critical.   However I understand that some people will ask the inevitable question 'What gear do you use?' so this video is for you!   Here's my 2021 gear list, I think its a fantastic setup for anyone who wants to get the best out of a relatively limited budget especially as I know that it works for not only creating great artwork but working in a commercial role for studios and businesses etc!   Also it gave me chance to try out my new lights and studio setup.  Before I get into more complex subjects. Video editing is a pretty steep learning curve for me at the moment, so I apologise for any errors or issues that are in this video. I did notice that there are focus issues as it got stuck to my mic and not me, there a flickering at one point which appeared during rendering and whilst I did my best to hide all my cuts there are a few I just had to leave in haha.  Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated!   I shot this on my iPhone 1, I could get better results using my cameras but they are in the video plus I'm not so committed to this that I want to dedicate a camera or mess with setting up every time, at least not right now, if I start getting an audience then I'll consider moving to using my a7ii but for now I think the iPhone will be fine once I get used to colour correcting the footage properly and also nailing the lighting setup, it looks better at night but as you see here daytime is quite flat!   Anyway, hope you enjoy the video, if you do please do all the podcast things would love to hear your comments and see you in the next episode!   You can find my work at:   https://harleybainbridge.com   or   https://instagram.com/harleybainbridge   and you'll find the podcast of this channel on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts or Anchor.   Links to all my social media and content can be found here on LinkTree  https://linktr.ee/Harleybainbridge --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/harleybainbridge/message

Advice - How I Stay Resilient While Developing a Career in Art and Photography.
Hello everybody! I hope this finds you all well and ready for the coming lifting of lockdown restrictions, please remember to stay safe! This week I actually managed to stick to my schedule and record a new episode! I decided to do a very off the cuff episode this week as I had quite a few experiences of misinformation, trolling and general hi-jinx which at some points frustrated and demoralised me but only in passing. This was quite a new thing as usually I struggle to stay on track and recover quickly from career knock-backs but this week I found myself a lot more capable of dealing with those issues and I wanted to discuss reason why I think I was able to move on from those experiences so quickly. I'll be talking about diversifying your audience, trolls, mentors and social pods, well I say talk it's probably more of a rant! I understand how frustrating it is for people to stay resilient, especially when it knocks confidence or instigates a creative block so I thought it would be useful for those who have or continue to have these issues. Hopefully with me talking about my experiences and advising on different ways to overcome knock-backs you'll find a way to manage your own development and continue creating and bailing an audience and career. As always, your feedback is greatly appreciated so feel free to drop me an email or message at any of the following places; web - https://harleybainbridge.com insta - https://www.instagram.com/harleybainbridge blog - https://harleybainbridgephotographyblog.wordpress.com email - harleybainbridge@gmail.com Also thank you to YouTuber 'Noir Et Blanc Vie' for the music, you can find their channel here; https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIUATMnLtNo51kKuv95R1UQ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/harleybainbridge/message

What Can a Photograph Tell Us? reading 'A Wall in Paris, Texas' - Wim Wenders
HI everyone I hope this episode finds you all well! Apologies as usual for being delayed with my upload, I tried a few times to get this episode down for upload in a week but ended up ordering a new microphone after frustration with my old one. This episode is about reading imagery but I introduce more detail on the academic tools used to gain some additional information from what we see. If you would prefer to read the blog post you can here; https://harleybainbridgephotographyblog.wordpress.com/ As has been quite normal recently I'll be looking at a specific image and that is 'A Wall in Paris, Texas' by Wim Wenders. If you want to view the image along with the podcast this is a link to the image; http://www.artnet.com/artists/wim-wenders/wall-in-paris-texas-d2Tnf3n8OUm6g9QkdzD3ag2 In this episode I also mention work by Roland Barthes which you can find here; https://www.amazon.co.uk/Camera-Lucida-Reflections-Photography-Classics/dp/0099225417 and as also the background music is from a YouTube creator Et Vie Blanc, you can find their channel her; https://www.amazon.co.uk/Camera-Lucida-Reflections-Photography-Classics/dp/0099225417 I'm not affiliated so don't receive any kickback from these link, I just think it makes it easier for those looking to find some reference material. Reading Photographs - 'I Can't Breathe' - Brunel Johnson
Hi everyone! This weeks episode is a little late, but it is also pretty long! I'll be discussing my reading of the photograph, 'I Can't Breathe' by Brunel Johnson. For those who wish to view the image you can find it here https://www.1854.photography/awards/portrait-of-britain/winners/#foogallery-47177/i:58 And thank you to Brunel Johnson who's work can be found at https://www.bruneljohnson.com This was a challenging episode to write and record as the nature of the image can be considered difficult and sensitive but I feel the topics that I touch on need to be addressed more by white content creators in order to ensure questions around representation of Black people and the challenges they face reach as many people as possible. The topics are primarily how the photographer's compositional and post production decisions can influence the perceptions of an audience. If you enjoy this episode, or even if you don't, feel free to drop me a message on either the voice message system or at the following places where you will find my own photographic work and further blog posts... https://www.twitter.com/hbainbridge https://www.instagram.com/harleybainbridge  https://www.harleybainbridge.com https://harleybainbridgephotographyblog.wordpress.com harleybainbridge@gmail.com I'd really appreciate your feedback on the content and style of these episodes including the sound production as I am still learning and refining production, Thank you Harley --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/harleybainbridge/message
