Our Editor's Take

What is behind the inspiration for dressing a particular way? What motivates someone to wear something instead of something else? Dressed: The History of Fashion podcast explores fashion's evolution through the ages.

Every style-from togas to distressed jeans-is a form of personal expression and cultural identity. On this podcast, April Calahan and Cassidy Zachary guide listeners through the evolution of fashion.

This style-oriented podcast shares fascinating fashion facts. Hosts Cassidy and April are both fashion historians. On Dressed: The History of Fashion, they explore the fashion choices people make. They understand that the way someone dresses can express many types of identity. Cardigans and leotards were the names of men before they became common forms of clothing. The term "denim" comes from a French city. "Jeans" are so named after a city in Italy. Fashion is about more than attractive garments. Clothes can be political statements and part of social movements.

Each week, April and Cassidy explore fashion's social, cultural, and political history. Beginning with haute couture, they discuss modern clothing, swimsuits, and polka dots. The biggest names in fashion and fashion history today join as special guests. In one podcast episode, April and Cassidy talk with Emma McClendon. She specializes in how the ideal body type changes throughout time. Over the centuries, women have manipulated their bodies to match a fashionable ideal. The "perfect" height, weight, complexion, and hairstyle might seem bizarre now. In the 18th century, women's hairstyles could be up to four feet tall. In the 19th century, hoop skirts could reach four feet in diameter. In other episodes, they discuss sustainability and the true cost of fashion.

What makes clothing on different continents and countries distinct? Why is fashion so different in China, India, Africa, and Europe? Podcast listeners learn about styles throughout the globe and through the centuries. Cassidy and April reveal the surprising ways fashion trends come and go. Podcast listeners may start thinking more about what they choose to wear. New Dressed: The History of Fashion episodes drop several times a week.

Learn more about the podcast here Episode description: Venice Beach teen Dee Dee Keel was desperate to find out what was happening behind the scenes, in the clubs and hotel rooms of Hollywood: so she tracked an intriguing local rocker, Jim Morrison, on his way to the Strip. That’s where she first saw Miss Pamela in all her groupie glamour.By 1969, Pamela Des Barres was no longer a Valley teenybopper; she had transformed into a rock icon-in-the-making. Her freaky clique of Laurel Canyon sprites were ordained by Frank Zappa to become the world’s first all-girl band of all-girl groupies, the GTOs. Soon, they had the likes of the Flying Burrito Brothers, the Who, and Led Zeppelin taking notice, just as Rolling Stone dedicated an entire issue to the groupie phenomenon and made the GTOs its centerfold. Our Sponsors:* Check out Acorns: https://acorns.com/DRESSED* Check out Happy Mammoth and use my code DRESSED for a great deal: happymammoth.com* Check out Rakuten: https://www.rakuten.comSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/dressed-the-history-of-fashion/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
