Adventuring and Instructing - With WSA's Ben Longhurst
In this week's interview we feature Ben Longhurst, the Technical Director of the innovative UK organisation, The Water Skills Academy (WSA). Water Skills Academy cover a number of bases … they run expeditions and SUP holidays across the world, they run SUP industry events and in person events to inspire and keep paddlers informed and they were particularly active during the initial UK lockdowns with webinars...which certainly kept morale up when we couldn't get onto the water WSA's core mission is to offer courses to build skills and certify instructors for adventure guiding, surfing, lifesaving and a number of other specialisms. The topic of instructors isn’t something which we’ve covered before on the podcast, and while there are some clear benefits to getting coached, whatever your level, there are also real benefits to becoming an instructor, because it's fun particularly introducing people into the sport. Ben is an experienced adventurer in his own right and we also talk about his experience descending the worlds deepest gorge in Nepal and the west coast of Scotland In the episode we also talk about: Sian Sykes' SUPfm Episode which is here: https://www.supfmpodcast.com/episode/circumnavigating-wales-by-sup-and-other-adventures WSA's Lockdown Webinars here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7USWXLNQdYDnBXJZ-AkTlbFn8R6kKsp_ (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7USWXLNQdYDnBXJZ-AkTlbFn8R6kKsp_) Check out the video of Ben's spectacular expedition in Nepal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eH4Ts3XTnZg Visit the WSA Website here : https://www.waterskillsacademy.com/ Connect with WSA on social media Facebook https://www.facebook.com/waterskillsacademy Instagram https://www.instagram.com/waterskillsacademy/ This episode is brought to you in association with Starboard. How I Circumnavigated the UK by SUP - With Brendon Prince
This week Brendon Prince makes a triumphant return to the show after his epic 4000km circumnavigation around mainland Britain, which has been covered by international and British news media. Brendon has broken a number of world records in the process and encountered the best and the worst of what the British coastline has to offer, and in this episode he talks about the experiences which shaped his trip including his 'interesting' encounter with Orcas. The purpose of his trip was to raise money to develop an app to engage school children and the public to teach water safety and ultimately reduce the number of drownings in the UK. For a coastal nation we are generally uneducated about water and the sea, and this app communicates the message to children (and adults) effectively through games, stories and interaction, which is a highly effective method. My Trans-Atlantic SUP Crossing - with Chris Bertish
This week we're proud to feature Speaker, Author, Filmmaker, Conservationist and Ocean Pioneer, Chris Bertish. Chris has scored a number of incredible achievements, including his legendary victory at Mavericks, the big wave Californian surf break. In this interview we talk about his record-breaking 2016 crossing of the Atlantic by SUP which is captured in his newly released documentary 'Last Known Coordinates'. We were able to grab some time with Chris, speaking to him from his family beach house in South Africa. Despite the odd loss of signal, we managed to capture a fascinating interview which showcased his uncompromising attitude and methodical approach, which has propelled Chris to so many epic achievements. We talk about how to push your comfort zone and adaptability, being comfortable with change and not just surviving but thriving despite managing difficult and changing environments. While we don't personally expect to be paddling the Atlantic anytime soon, we hope that this interview will give you the everyday inspiration to keep going, embrace spending time outside your comfort zone and really go all in for your passion, whatever it is. Chris's next challenge is to wing-foil the Pacific in 2022 in his Transpac https://chrisbertish.com/project/transpac-wing/ (project) making the first carbon neutral crossing from California to Hawaii and crossing 2750 miles of open ocean. As we mention , this is just a taster and we hope that this inspires you to find out more about safety through listening to the episodes in full, taking a course with an instructor or taking our Online SUP Safety Course at www.supfm.thinkific.com If you haven't yet listened to our beginners week iSUP episode then we also talk in more detail about safety and the effect of the wind. Our most downloaded episode of all time, features Professor Mike Tipton and we add an excerpt from our fascinating interview with him, about preparing yourself for paddling in cold water, which can still be a risk during the summer months. Ian's Article - This is the best independent information on buying your SUP out there!STARTING OUT GUIDECHOOSING A BOARD The most commonly asked question on any sup group worldwide we want to help by giving a quick intro to board and paddle choice for any of our group members. * POINT 1 * In reality you have 2 categories of boards being 1) Inflatable and 2) Hard construction. 1) An inflatable board is one that is stored in a bag, but when ready for use can be rolled out and pumped up. 2) A hard board uses a build material of a foam core wrapped in either an epoxy or carbon, much like a normal surf board. Within each category (inflatable and hard board) you have subsets including : All rounder, Tourer, Race, Downwind and Surf sups. * POINT 2 * Inflatable: PROS If storage space is limited then the isup or inflatable is a great option. You don't need roofbars on a car to transport them as they can easily fit into a car boot. They're light to carry (some are heavier than others) They're not as easily damaged as a hard board so can be dropped or laid on concrete for example without risking cracking the hard board skin. Great as a shared family board for mucking about on. CONS They are affected more by wind as they often sit higher in the water. They don't have the more refined shapes that hard boards have. They're not as adept at surfing or more performance oriented sup. They can puncture and deflate. Hard board: PROS The board designer can refine a shape and has way more control over...
