White Basement Podcast

Jason Mo

The White Basement Podcast was born from a collaboration between a couple of forty something friends who had to move our Brazilian JiuJitsu practice into a private garage gym, in order to continue training and chatting, during the lockdown. The gym became affectionately known as 'The White Basement' and the regular training we undertook kept us fit, active, healthy and sane! Now that the world is back to to the New normal, we decided to start the podcast as a way to share our conversations, philosophies and experiences, both on and off the JiuJitsu Mats with anyone and everyone who wants to listen. So many people seem to be increasingly isolated in this modern world. Real connections are harder to make, cancel culture is out of control and physical contact is being systematically destroyed by the relentless march of virtualising everything. Well not here! Not on the White Basement mat and Not on the White Basement Podcast! Real talk with real guests in a real studio is what we're bringing. Our intention is for the podcast to be a companion to anyone who needs it, and a bit of positivity, motivation and humour for everyone who listens. We'll bring in a diverse range of guests, and each episode we'll aim to explore aspects of health, fitness, human performance, mental and emotional wellness, philosophy, travel stories, trips down memory lane, Conspiracy theories and some controversial left-field guests and topics as well. Hopefully, together, somewhere along the way, we'll all be able to trace a slightly better path through this strange and wonderful thing called life. We're all getting older, hopefully getting wiser, probably getting balder, or hairier, but we're still trying to strangle people unconscious on the mats. Metaphorically speaking or not... So come along for the ride and keep us company, and we'll do the same for you. You can follow us on Insta @whitebasementpod and @jasonwhitebasement New Episodes dropping weekly read less

#114 When Governments Play Games: The Psychology of Fear and Racism
Krishnan Nath and Gosia Lendzioszek joined me on the show. This episode delves into the complex interplay between racism, xenophobia, and government narratives, highlighting how these factors contribute to societal division and conflict. The discussion centers on the idea that media often amplifies fears surrounding immigration and race, creating a manufactured boogeyman that distracts from more pressing issues. Speakers share personal experiences with racism and reflect on how societal attitudes have evolved over time, particularly in the context of recent events and protests. The conversation also touches on the economic implications of immigration, exploring how different waves of migrants integrate and contribute to society while facing unique challenges. Throughout, the episode emphasizes the importance of questioning prevailing narratives and fostering dialogue to bridge divides and promote understanding. The podcast episode delves into the complex and often contentious issues surrounding racism, xenophobia, and immigration, weaving personal narratives with broader societal observations. One poignant moment comes from a guest's childhood experience of discrimination in the UK, highlighting the emotional scars left by such encounters. This narrative serves as a springboard for a deeper discussion on the historical patterns of race riots in the UK, particularly in times of economic strife. The speakers analyze how societal tensions can be exploited by political entities to create a 'boogeyman' effect, effectively diverting attention from systemic issues to scapegoating marginalized groups. They argue that the media plays a crucial role in perpetuating these narratives, often failing to provide a nuanced view that considers the complexities of immigration and the diverse experiences of immigrants. A critical theme throughout the conversation is the notion of 'divide and conquer,' as the speakers explore how governments and media narratives can manipulate public perception. They discuss the recent influx of Ukrainian refugees as a case study, contrasting this with the treatment of migrants from other regions, and questioning the underlying biases that drive these differing responses. The episode challenges listeners to reconsider their views on immigration, urging them to recognize the shared humanity and potential contributions of all individuals, regardless of their background. The speakers advocate for a more inclusive dialogue that embraces diversity, not just in terms of ethnicity or nationality, but also in thought and experience. The episode culminates in a powerful call for empathy and understanding, emphasizing that racism and xenophobia are not merely issues of personal prejudice but are deeply rooted in socio-economic conditions and political machinations. By sharing personal stories and engaging in thoughtful analysis, the speakers aim to foster a greater awareness of the systemic nature of these problems and inspire listeners to engage in meaningful conversations that transcend superficial judgments. This multifaceted exploration of racism, immigration, and media influence serves as a reminder of the work still needed to build a more equitable society, one that recognizes and values the contributions of every individual. Takeaways: Racism and xenophobia can often be exacerbated by media narratives that divide communities. The experience of immigrants often varies significantly between generations, impacting their integration. Understanding the economic factors driving immigration can help address societal tensions and fears. The rise of AI and automation poses questions about future job availability and economic stability. Government responses to crises can create environments where fear and division thrive. Diverse viewpoints in discussions about race and immigration can foster understanding and reduce conflict.

#113 The Curious Case of Curvature: Measuring the Earth's Shape
This Episode dives deep into the contentious topic of the Earth's shape, with lively debate. Jerome Bloom - man of Science - firmly argues that the Earth is a sphere, backed by personal experiences and scientific principles, while Jason Mo - the Tin foil hat wearing host, expresses skepticism about established narratives, suggesting that many accepted truths, including the shape of the Earth, may not be as clear-cut as they seem. The discussion explores various concepts, including gravity, buoyancy, and the behavior of water, highlighting how these factors shape our understanding of the world. Additionally, they touch on the implications of gyroscopes and how they function in aviation, questioning how a gyroscope would react when flying over a curved Earth. Throughout the conversation, both speakers engage with humor and curiosity, aiming to unravel the complexities surrounding these fundamental questions.Exploring the fascinating intersection of science and skepticism, this episode presents a robust dialogue on the shape of the Earth. Jerome articulates a strong defense of the spherical model, drawing from personal travel experiences and scientific principles. Highlighting that the observable phenomena, such as the curvature of the horizon and the behavior of water, align with the understanding that Earth is a globe. In contrast, Jason challenges these perspectives, probing into the motivations behind mainstream scientific narratives and engaging with conspiracy theories surrounding the flat Earth concept. The episode delves into various scientific principles, such as the principles of buoyancy and gravity, and how they govern the behavior of objects in our atmosphere. This exploration leads to a rich conversation about the nature of evidence, the importance of empirical observation, and the willingness to question established beliefs. The speakers navigate through complex topics, including gyroscopic motion, atmospheric pressure, and the influence of the sun on weather patterns, making this episode a thought-provoking listen for anyone interested in the nature of reality and the foundations of scientific understanding.Follow Jerome @gripcraft.hpkFollow the show @whitebasementpodTakeaways: The discussion highlights the compelling nature of scientific inquiry, particularly regarding Earth's shape. Gravity's effects and the principles of buoyancy are vital for understanding atmospheric pressure. Flat Earth theories often rely on questioning established scientific concepts rather than empirical evidence. Experiments measuring curvature over large distances can provide insight into Earth's shape. The role of gyroscopes in aviation demonstrates the importance of angular momentum in navigation. Understanding the properties of water helps clarify why it appears level despite Earth's curvature. **************HELP SUPPORT THE POD🍄 ☕️ Check out our sponsor ENRICHD https://enrichd.com for all your medicinal mushroom needs as well as protein powders 💪🏽🧉 and other superfoods🥦🥬 Use promo code 'whitebasementpod' for a 10% discount site wide!***************❄️⛑ Check out our new sponsor CETUEM https://www.cetuem.com/products/ice-pack?_pos=1&_psq=ice&_ss=e&_v=1.0Hit their site and grab a tub of Ice Pack Gel to keep you on the mats after the unavoidable strains, sprains and silliness of hard training.
