Our Editor's Take

How Haunted? Podcast | Horrible Histories, Real Life Ghost Stories, and Paranormal Investigations from Some of the Most Haunted Places on Earth tours the scariest places in the UK and beyond.

Host Rob Kirkup has spent two decades investigating more than 50 alleged hauntings. Kirkup researches specters, phantoms, apparitions, ghosts, and poltergeists. He has written more than a dozen books about paranormal activity. His show takes listeners on his harrowing investigations. Kirkup and his team visit locations such as Northumberland and York. Many people consider these the most haunted areas of England.

Kirkup's writing prowess is evident as he describes locales. He helps listeners visualize the setting, the atmosphere, and their fear level. Kirkup describes the team's apparel and equipment, too. Some investigators pack extra underwear in their prep kits for logical reasons.

In one episode of the How Haunted? Podcast, Kirkup and friends visit York's National Railway Museum. They stay at The Bar Convent, established in secrecy in 1686. It's the oldest surviving convent in England, created at a time Catholicism was illegal there.

At the museum, a guide explains how they test visitors before ghost hunts. They inquire about mental health, medications, fear of heights, and balance. That helps guests differentiate between paranormal experiences and other symptoms. Kirkup has a calm demeanor. He's a tae kwon do instructor with excellent balance. Kirkup attended flight school and isn't afraid of heights. These facts make his museum experience compelling.

When crossing a bridge, though, Kirkup panics. The guide takes him below the bridge. He feels an immediate sense of calm. When Kirkup returns to the bridge, he panics again. The guide reveals what once happened on that bridge. It explains Kirkup's reaction. That's only the beginning of a fright-filled night. Their visit was so vivid, one team member decided not to join them on future ghost hunts.

New episodes of How Haunted? Podcast | Horrible Histories, Real Life Ghost Stories, and Paranormal Investigations from Some of the Most Haunted Places on Earth premiered weekly until 2024. Kirkup then changed them to twice a month. Podcast listeners who enjoy haunted adventures won't be easily scared away.

Bonus Episode 10 - The Cammo Estate

Bonus Episode 10 - The Cammo Estate
Originally released for Patreons in June 2023 I hope you enjoy this very special episode. A grand estate built around a house built in 1693, and destroyed by fire in 1977 is said to be the haunt of shadowy figures belonging to those who knew the building so well in life. The stable block, added in 1811, is one of the more active areas. Why this is the case we’ll likely never know. Phantom lights float around the house, and whispering is heard deep in the woodland. Dogs howl and bark within the grounds in the dead of night, and can be heard for miles around. Would I encounter any of these phantoms when my team and I investigated this estate back in the spring of 2012? Let's find out together. Tonight, join me for a very special episode, as we return to Edinburgh and ask just how haunted is the Cammo Estate? March Patreon Teaser - The Lit & Phil
In the 19th Patreon bonus podcast you join me as I investigate a building dating from 1825, which is today the largest independent library outside of London. This was the first public building lit by an electric lightbulb and in 1830 a mummy from Egypt was unwrapped right here. But what would happen when, joined by fellow Geordie podcaster, Icy Sedgwick, we attended a fundraising ghost hunt at this historic location in our home town. Some have claimed that this building could be the home of 16 individual spirits, including a former librarian who still the flicks through the books after dark. So tonight, join me as together ask, just how haunted is the Lit & Phil. Bonus Episode 9 - Haggerston Castle Holiday Park

Bonus Episode 9 - Haggerston Castle Holiday Park
Originally released for Patreons in May 2023 I hope you enjoy this very special episode. A popular holiday park built around a 13th century castle. This is not your typical location for a paranormal investigation, a holiday park full of luxury caravans and holiday makers spending their weekends boating on the lake, or playing on the arcades and fruit machines. What they’re all blissfully unaware of however is the darker side of this particular holiday park. The ghosts and ghouls that roam the older parts. These include the Victorian lady who roams the Rotunda, the small child seen within the summer house, and the man seen walking through the Italian gardens. Would I encounter any of these phantoms when my team and I investigated this holiday park one summer’s night? Let’s find out together. Tonight, join me for a very special episode, as in the month that my new book Paranormal Northumberland is released, we head to that very county and turn our attention, rather unusually, to Haggerston Castle Holiday Park. Ep 71 - Shepton Mallet Prison
This time we head inside the oldest prison in the world. For almost four centuries this place of incarceration in Somerset witnessed disease, violence, and executions. This has created a breeding ground for the spooks and specters that remain here to this day, as it is now a tourist attraction that caters for those with an interest in the paranormal. Episode 1 REMASTERED - Greyfriars Kirkyard
To celebrate the first birthday of How Haunted? on the 2nd September, I've revisited the first ever episode and added a little over 15 minutes of audio from the investigation I conducted at the Covenanter's Prison, a place so dark and dangerous that no one else has ever been allowed to investigate here.   This was initially only available to Patreons, if you want to get access to Patreon content when it's initially released check out Patreon.com/howhauntedpod    Thank you so much for supporting the podcast!   With ties to Greyfriars' Bobby and Harry Potter, Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh is a fascinating location. In this inaugural episode of How Haunted? let's look at the darker side of the graveyard as we look at the dangerous Mackenzie Poltergeist of the Covenanter's Prison.   We'll delve into the history the ghost stories, and what would happen when Rob was able to spend some time all alone in the Black Mausoleum, the site of over 4000 physical attacks by the violent phantom?   Find out when, together, we ask How Haunted is Greyfriars Kirkyard?   Support How Haunted? by subscribing and leaving a review. This time we begin a two-part special in which we look at the favourite toy of many children, all over the globe, a delightful companion that provides many years of companionship in those early innocent years of life. However when we grow older their fixed grin and staring vacant eyes of a child’s doll can be the stuff of nightmares. Bonus Episode 8 - The National Railway Museum
Originally released for Patreons in April I hope you enjoy this very special episode. A popular railway museum, which opened in 1975, is said to be the haunt of a number of ghosts. Paul, a violent entity who lurks in the ladies toilets, George who remains within the Travelling Post Office, and still takes huge pride in his work, many years following his passing, a tall man in a top hat, a mischievous spirit who likes to mess up the gift shop after dark, the archives has been the scene of terrifying possessions, and a haunted train carriage which was once used as a mobile brother by the Nazis during the second world war. Would I encounter any of these phantoms when my team and I joined another group to investigate this building after dark? Let’s find out together. Tonight, join me for a very special episode, as I once again take on one of the scariest places in York, this time, the National Railway Museum. The Nightmare Before Christmas 2023
22-12-2023
The Nightmare Before Christmas 2023
The second annual Nightmare Before Christmas special is upon us, and in this special episode I will read real ghost stories from listeners. Christmas is intrinsically linked with the telling of ghost stories, so it seems like the perfect time to tell these stories of timeslips, premonitions, gifts from beyond the grave, and frightening encounters with the dead. There’ll also be polterguests dropping by, in the form of authors, podcasters, bloggers and YouTubers, and they’ll tell you of their own scary experiences in their own words. Two of these stories are accompanied by audio recordings which are most definitely not for those of a nervous disposition, as they appear to capture the voices of the dead. You have been warned. Huge thank you to Carole, Dorothy, Karen, Craig, Barney, Jim, and 'Michael' for sending in their stories for me to read.  And an equally enormous thanks to my polterguests, Emma, Rob, Icy and Nicky, who contributed to this Christmas special. You can find Icy Sedgwick's podcast at https://pod.co/fabulous-folklore-with-icy  Her Halloween special, which is a chat with me about ghosts while we sat inside Newcastle's oldest building is at https://pod.co/fabulous-folklore-with-icy/two-ghost-hunters-in-conversation-at-newcastle-castle  And Icy's website is at https://www.icysedgwick.com  Emma's blog is at https://weird-wiltshire.co.uk  Rob's frightfully good YouTube channel is at https://www.youtube.com/@DeadAirTV  And Nicky and Charles Wright's new podcast, The World's Most Haunted, is going to launch in early 2024. Ep 67 - Woodchester Mansion Part 2
This time I’m joined by Emma from the Weird Wiltshire blog as we continue to explore the mysteries of an unfinished mansion in Gloucestershire. We discuss why it was never finished, we attempt to separate fact from fiction when it comes to some of the darker tales surrounding the building, and Emma will tell us some more of the grand house’s ghost stories.
