Three Coaches and a 'Slap'

Three Coaches and a 'Slap'
We bring to you a podcast and vidcast that's packed with 32 years of coaching experience in Ultimate!Coaching is a wonderful thing. Coaches get to truly influence the lives of athletes in ways that affect their regular life. This is more so true in Ultimate because of the self-officiation and the 'Spirit of the Game' aspects. Hence, we wanted to dive deeper into the intersectionality of gender and Ultimate coaches. So, we called upon coaching experts from India and the USA. Jaidip Patel, co-Host, first got together with guest hosts Sumedha Kandpal and Nandan Ravi Latha to set up a line-of-questioning. Sumedha and Nandan are familiar faces in the Indian Ultimate sphere as they've coached various teams at national, regional, and grassroots levels. With their depth of knowledge, work, and curiosity it was a tough task to finalize 'what would we speak about'.After a bunch of trimming down, Jaidip, Sumedha, and Nandan chatted with one of Bay Area's most respected coaches - Manisha 'Slap' Daryani. Slap has been playing Ultimate for 17 years and coaching Ultimate for 10. If this wasn't enough, she has won a bunch of World Championship medals and titles.Watch the four coaches talk about gender and coaching, mixed-gender at a pro-league level, competition structures, Olympics and Ultimate, and more. A BIG SHOUT OUT to Munis Thahir, captain of San Jose Spiders, for connecting us to Manisha and providing constant support.   We guarantee you will fall in love with Ultimate a little bit more.  Hope you enjoy the episode as much as we enjoyed producing it. Gender Series pt.1: Gender Identities 101 with Adwitiya and Rasika

Gender Series pt.1: Gender Identities 101 with Adwitiya and Rasika
'Mixed-gender sport' is among the top three reasons Ultimate Frisbee is loved and enjoyed. But, what does it mean? What practical steps does it take for a sport to be inclusive of all genders? With our collective growth in understanding of the gender identity spectrum, the binary genders, 'Men' & 'Women', or 'Male' & 'Female', that we broadly classify in Ultimate as Mixed-gender excludes all genders outside the binary. Then, shouldn't we say Ultimate is a 'Gender-binary sport'? In line with the 'Pride Month', and the onset of the Global Pride Day, 'The Unintended Receiver' podcast hosts set out in search of voices that can - Demystify gender identities and gender equity, Share lived experiences of being outside the binary, and  Pinpoint discriminatory practices and corrective action steps. The 'Gender Series' is a multi-part discussion with people who work to advance gender equity and gender justice. The first in this series is a chat with Adwitiya Dawn and Rasika Gopalakrishnan of People's Ultimate League (PUL). Dawn (she/her) and Rasika (she/her) are alumni of the Ashoka University, where they met and played Ultimate together. In 2020, they received a grant from the 'Onside Fund', which is operated by the non-profit Women Win. This grant funds the operations of the People's Ultimate League, which will work towards coaching the LGBTQ+ communities in the sport of Ultimate Frisbee and hosting a league. They break down gender and what it means in the context of Ultimate. They also share details on the People's Ultimate League and what Joes/Josephines like us can do in our club practices or tournaments to be an ally. Plus, Rasika also shares the experience of playing Ultimate as a non-binary person. Hope you learn and unlearn through the episode.
