Online social media is now as ubiquitous as it is inextricable, especially as it has grown integral to every facet of our daily lives. Suicide, attempted suicide, and purposeful self-harm have all increased as a result of this increase in social media use, particularly among adolescents. According to several studies, greater use and exposure to social media platforms predicts an increased likelihood of undesirable consequences such as bullying and may lead to suicide.

Here are some suggestions for using social media in a healthy and productive manner.

  1. Follow people and things that bring you joy.
  2. Unfollow unhealthy accounts.
  3. Support and connect with others in real life.
  4. Reduce your screen time.
  5. Take an extended break away from social media when needed.

Marie Cradle joins this episode of Hope Out of the Darkness to talk about the dangers of social media and offers tips and tricks on how to become more conscious of when you’re starting to develop toxic and potentially harmful behaviour. She shares some of her favorite self-care practices and urges people to design their own self-care routine, both on and off line, to help improve their mental health.

Marie also shares the various challenges of trying to reach people through social media and how AFSP has found success by using social media marketing. AFSP is working to not only bring awareness to suicide prevention, but also reach people who might be in need and don’t know where to look.
