Why join a Chamber of Commerce?
It’s a rare occurrence for me to have two guests on The Business Show, but that’s what happens on today’s episode of The Business Show, which features Paul Britton, Chief Executive of Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce, and Richard Collins, who as well as running CSR Accreditation, is President of the Buckinghamshire Chamber of Commerce, one of the constituents of Paul’s organisation. We talk first about how Paul came to be doing what he’s doing, and how Richard became a Local President.Paul then explained the set-up of the Chamber, which is part of a UK and global network, and more importantly perhaps, what that means for members.I discussed with both guests the role of local chambers, which is around driving change and contributing to the Chamber’s Business Manifesto.Membership of the Chamber has changed from employment-based membership to a new model and we talk about why that was recently implemented, and the outcome so far.Of clear interest to members is the differentiator - what does the new model mean in terms of cost, and how do members measure their return on investment. To get in touch with Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce go to https://www.thamesvalleychamber.co.uk/ while their membership info is at https://www.thamesvalleychamber.co.uk/membership/ and an overview of what they offer is at https://www.thamesvalleychamber.co.uk/what-we-offer/ .You can connect with Paul Britton at https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulbrittonthamesvalley/. Richard Collins is open to connection at https://www.linkedin.com/in/csr-accreditation/ whether you want to talk about the Buckinghamshire Chamber or CSR Accreditation, and you can find info on the latter at https://csr-accreditation.co.uk/ . If you want to connect with me, to talk about the mentoring and coaching I deliver to small businesses, or if you think you'd be a good guest on the show, please do let me know. You can do that via https://www.linkedin.com/in/enterprisedoctor/ .To contribute to (or just read) conversations about this episode, please join the podcast's Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/enterprisedoctorbusinessshow/ .And my website is at https://enterprisedoctor.co.uk/. On the YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/EnterpriseDoctor you can hear clips of other episodes – please subscribe there! And within your podcast app, remember to like this episode (if you like it!), leave us a great review, and please do subscribe there too, to ensure new episodes hit your app as soon as they're released. These words and the content of the podcast are © Enterprise Doctor 2022

Hilary Messer and Tony K Silver guest on The Business Show on Marlow FM 5th May 2022
On The Business Show on Marlow FM on 5th May 2022, guests Hilary Messer and Tony K Silver joined me for business conversations and some great music – you can connect with them at https://www.linkedin.com/in/hilary-messer-4393332/ and https://www.linkedin.com/in/tonyksilver/ respectively.I kicked the show off with Abba’s “The Winner Takes It All” dedicated to one of my regular squash opponents Ben – I’m not saying to whom it applies.   😉  Have a listen at https://youtu.be/92cwKCU8Z5c .I spoke first to Hilary about Gardner Leader, the firm of solicitors for which she works, and about her specialism in what used to be called litigation, but is now called dispute resolution.  See all about Gardner Leader at https://www.gardner-leader.co.uk/.I then talked to Tony K Silver of Solid Silver Solutions and in particular about the award he recently won, as well as the work he does with clients to enable their LinkedIn profile to give them the results they want, which do of course vary from client to client.“Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina and the Waves was Tony’s choice of music, because it’s a very happy song!  You can hear it, and be happy, at https://youtu.be/iPUmE-tne5U.Our first business news story for discussion was Tony’s choice and can be found at https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-61298394 and sparked quite a debate on the pros & cons of paying people less to work from home.Hilary’s choice of story for us was no about where to work, but for how long to work.  Will the four day week be a thing?  See https://smallbusiness.co.uk/uk-businesses-join-four-day-work-week-trial-scheme-2560331/ for the article that sparked this conversation.“Business as Usual” by The Eagles was Hilary’s music choice for us. The lyrics mean a lit to her, especially right now – have a listen for yourself at https://youtu.be/oVZlNJrOGEU. Our final conversation was also Hilary’s choice – the menopause is something we’ve never discussed on The Business Show, but we absolutely should, so we did.  Have a read of the article we discussed at https://www.smeweb.com/2022/04/08/time-for-business-to-end-this-toxic-silence-around-menopause/.With another personal dedication, this time to my cousins Ray & Andrea who were visiting from LA, I closed the show with ELO’s “Last Train to London”, which they were catching later– you can enjoy it at https://youtu.be/Up4WjdabA2c.You can connect with me at https://www.linkedin.com/in/enterprisedoctor/ and join our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/enterprisedoctorbusinessshow/ .  My website is at https://enterprisedoctor.co.uk/ .  Clips of all episodes are at https://www.youtube.com/user/EnterpriseDoctor/ - please subscribe there, and within your podcast app! Copyright Marlow FM Ltd 2022. Sometimes you have to jump to it, or JDI as I (nearly) sometimes say.  Jump to the track yourself, at https://youtu.be/Rx0mYN32Kps.Janet’s choice of story for us was the one at https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/423778 - how are you making your business more sustainable, and will these tips help? Our final conversation was Helena’s choice – a nice local story which you can find at https://www.bucksfreepress.co.uk/news/20069869.haringtons-salon-offering-free-haircut-week-marlow/ - a lovely thing for them to do, and some good PR too. As another nod to summer, I closed the show with Donna Summer and, as I was on the radio, I chose “On The Radio” – you can enjoy it at https://youtu.be/gPzMxB2uct0. You can connect with me at https://www.linkedin.com/in/enterprisedoctor/ and join our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/enterprisedoctorbusinessshow/ .  My website is at https://enterprisedoctor.co.uk/ .  Clips of all episodes are at https://www.youtube.com/user/EnterpriseDoctor/ - please subscribe there, and within your podcast app! Copyright Marlow FM Ltd 2022. Season seven introMarlow Film Studios special edition of The Business Show on Marlow FM 10th March 2022
The Business Show on Marlow FM on 10th March 2022 was a departure from the usual format – rather than discussing business news stories, there was just one story to discuss – the proposed construction and operation of Marlow Film Studios.  You can read all about that, and sign up for ongoing news, at https://www.marlow.film/.My two guests were eminently qualified to talk on the subject.  The first was the founder and CEO of the studio, Robert Laycock, and he was joined by Ellie Evans, Senior Partner at Volterra, economic consultants to the studio.  You can see more about Volterra and their work at https://volterra.co.uk/ and you can connect with Robert and Ellie at https://www.linkedin.com/in/robert-laycock-72818a1bb/ and https://www.linkedin.com/in/ellie-evans-4aa03820/respectively. All four pieces of music on today’s show are from films – surprising?  Not!I found https://www.vulture.com/article/best-movie-songs-ranked.html and started the show with the number two iconic soundtrack song - Aerosmith, with “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” from the film Armageddon – you can hear it now at https://youtu.be/JkK8g6FMEXE .I spoke first to Robert, and asked how one becomes the CEO of a film studio, what he likes about it most, and what he likes about it least!Ellie then talked about the economic consultancy that is Volterra, which demonstrates the economic, social, health and regeneration impact of major developments, including Crossrail, HS1, HS2 and now Marlow Film Studios.  We do also cover off why a new film studio should be in the UK, and specifically in the West London film cluster.“Nobody Does it Better” by Carly Simon was Robert’s choice of music, as this month marks 60 years since the first production on Dr No.  And of course, in terms of Bond and of British film making, nobody does it better.  You can hear the track at https://youtu.be/SaV-6qerkqI.Robert then talks about the philosophy of the studio – what will make it so good that productions will want to be based there?Ellie’s music choice, because it’s her favourite song, was Dolly Parton with “9 to 5” which you can hear at https://youtu.be/UbxUSsFXYo4.Ellie and I then start the conversation, which later involves Robert too, about the impact on businesses in the area.  Positive?  Negative?  Depends on the type of business??  And what about the long term impact?  Have a listen to this interesting interaction!I finished the show with the number one iconic film song – Celine Dion with “My Heart Will Go On” which you can hear at https://youtu.be/3gK_2XdjOdY joining a mere 168m views there. You can connect with me at https://www.linkedin.com/in/enterprisedoctor/ and join our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/enterprisedoctorbusinessshow/.  My website is at https://enterprisedoctor.co.uk/. Connect with them at https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarahjfurness/ and https://www.linkedin.com/in/simplifyingthecomplicated/respectively. Having had a fabulous lunch this week at https://www.thehandandflowers.co.uk/I played the first and last tracks on the show for them.  The first was The Beatles with “I Want To Hold Your Hand” which you can hear at https://youtu.be/jenWdylTtzs .  You can scroll down t see what the last was, or you can try to guess!I spoke first to Glenn Bolton of The Mill House about what that actually is, and how the pandemic has been both good and bad for a business offering a community experience.Sarah and I then talk about Well Be It, about mindfulness, and about flying a helicopter into wires with bullets flying over your head – subtly different to the average business challenge, but relevant nonetheless.“Colours” by Black Pumas was Sarah’s choice of music – she used to fly a Puma helicopter, but chose it mainly to help you to recharge and to put a smile on your face.  You can hear a great live version at https://youtu.be/tNAfR4qOZCY to see if it works for you!Her choice of business news story for us to discuss can be found at https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-afghanistan-conflict-usa-baby-exclusi-idUKKBN2JI0IL but what’s the business angle?  Listen in to find out.Glenn’s music choice was The Rolling Stones with “Gimme Shelter” – if you’re living life on the edge, have a listen at https://youtu.be/RbmS3tQJ7Os .His choice of business conversation was sparked by the story at https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20211214-great-resignation-into-great-reshuffle - people not just changing jobs, but changing their whole way of working, and how they invest that time. Our final conversation was my choice – you can find it at https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-59900249 - should they keep the money, give it back, or give it away?So – what’s the “Flowers” song I chose?  Hope you like Sandi Thom with “I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in my Hair)” – have a listen yourself at https://youtu.be/tLyw7jytykE.Find out more about Glenn and The Mill House via https://www.millhousewooburn.com/ or https://www.circafortyfive.com/, while Sarah’s website are at www.wellbeitcoach.com and https://sarahfurness.com/.You can connect with me at https://www.linkedin.com/in/enterprisedoctor/ and join our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/enterprisedoctorbusinessshow/.  My website is at https://enterprisedoctor.co.uk/. Morphing a hobby into a business
My guest in my first podcast of 2022 is Charity Haynes, founder and CEO of Haynes Gourmet.  She lives just a few hundred metres from me, despite the accent from the south of the USA, which she hasn’t lost in her 25 years living in the UK.The company’s main line is candied jalapenos, and they want to “pimp up everybody’s food”.So how did she go from bringing a few jars in her suitcase when returning from trips to the States, to making her own for friends and family, before morphing that into the business she runs today?  And what are the specific issues around starting a food business?  Listen in to find out!If you’re interested in our conversation about Bucks Business First, you can check them out at https://bbf.uk.com/ and you can go back to the podcast with their MD – it’s season 3 episode 9.To get in touch with Haynes Gourmet, use one of these options:Website:             https://haynesgourmet.comInstagram:          https://www.instagram.com/haynesgourmet/Facebook:          https://www.facebook.com/Haynesgourmet/If you want to connect with me, to talk about the mentoring and coaching I deliver to small businesses, or if you think you'd be a good guest on the show, please do let me know. Lawrence Wood and I co-host The Business Show on Marlow FM 30th December 2021
This is an edited version of The Business Show on Marlow FM on 30th December 2021.For a second consecutive show, it’s a first for us – this time it’s the first time ever, Lawrence and I co-hosted the show.  If you’ve not already done so, I’d recommend you connect with Lawrence at https://www.linkedin.com/in/lawrencemwood/ , especially if you like some of the things he says within the show. Our four discussion topics to mark the end of 2021 and to look ahead to whatever 2022 holds in store, are pivoting your business, business communication in the future, building a tribe in the hybrid working world and the changing culture in big business. As a big Elton John fan, I sort of had to start the show with Elton and Ed Sheeran’s hit “Merry Christmas”.  You can hear it and see the video I talked about at https://youtu.be/Q_yuO8UNGmY .We then move into talking about pivoting your business, looking at three categories of business – those who didn’t need to pivot but just needed to ride the wave, those who needed to pivot and didn’t, and those who needed to pivot and did.Lawrence’s first track was Ariana Grande with “Santa Tell Me - go to https://youtu.be/nlR0MkrRklgto hear it for yourself.Business communication was our next topic, and we looked at both internal and external communication including the need to consider carefully who you actually want to talk to.My other music choice was Wizzard’s “I Wish It Could be Christmas Every Day” – me, a grinch – never!  Have a listen at https://youtu.be/IJPc7esgvsA and spot the similarity to Elton & Ed’s parody! We then covered off building a tribe and the changing culture in big business, as the two topics seemed to fit together well.Lawrence finishes the show with his other choice of music – The Darkness with “Christmas Time (Don’t Let the Bells End)” – to see if it brings you the same light and joy as it brings Lawrence, have a listen at https://youtu.be/lrVg1toMzuo.You can connect with me at https://www.linkedin.com/in/enterprisedoctor/ and join our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/enterprisedoctorbusinessshow/.  My website is at https://enterprisedoctor.co.uk/. Tom Copas & Tony K Silver guest on The Business Show on Marlow FM 23rd December 2021
This is an edited version of The Business Show on Marlow FM on 23rd December 2021.My guests were Tom Copas and Tony K Silver - connect with them at https://www.linkedin.com/in/tom-c-copas-96128b23/and https://www.linkedin.com/in/tonyksilver/respectively. This episode was a first for The Business Show – an outside broadcast, live from the Copas turkey farm – see details at https://www.copasturkeys.co.uk/ .  On that basis, how else could I start the show other than playing John Lennon’s “Cold Turkey” – you can hear it at https://youtu.be/2C6ThAaxrWw , maybe while you’re munching on your cold turkey. The format of this episode was a little different, starting with a 1-2-1 conversation between Tom and myself, before he had to go off to deal with a million things that needed to be done – a busy day on the farm.As well as talking about the flow of customers through the farm and the potential for a hybrid event next year, we look at the impact of panic buying, and the massive problems with casual labour experienced by the business, resulting in a 95% staff turnover since last year.Tony K Silver’s first track for us today was “Driving Home for Christmas” by Chris Rea – listen in to find out why he chose it, go to https://youtu.be/EvDxSW8mzvU to hear it for yourself.Tony, who is a LinkedIn profile expert, starts by telling us about what Solid Silver Solutions does for a living and explains why he’ll be rebranding early next year.  We then turn to the first of three business news stories to discuss, all of which had a positive spin – you’ll find it at https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-59695242 - are you surprised too?Tony’s other music choice was Bing Crosby with “White Christmas” – if you also want to feel nostalgic, have a listen at https://youtu.be/w9QLn7gM-hY.His first choice of business conversation was sparked by the story at https://www.simplybusiness.co.uk/knowledge/articles/2021/12/2022-predictions-small-businesses/ - we by no means agreed with all of the predictions – let’s see what happens in 2022!Our final conversation was also Tony’s choice – you can find it at https://news.sky.com/story/uk-tech-sector-enjoys-record-year-after-start-ups-attract-more-capital-than-ever-before-12500579 - maybe we should all be starting tech companies!Given that we were on a farm, I thought “Junior’s Farm” from Paul McCartney & Wings would be a good choice to close on – have a listen yourself at https://youtu.be/pEil2e_bUvg.You can connect with me at https://www.linkedin.com/in/enterprisedoctor/ and join our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/enterprisedoctorbusinessshow/.  My website is at https://enterprisedoctor.co.uk/. Why get involved in a Peer Network?
Today’s podcast has, for the first time since the very first episode of the Enterprise Doctor Business Show, three guests. Before talking about peer networks and their benefits, I talk to Ceri-Jane Hackling about her business Cerub PR, to Mark Coldham about The Massage Company High Wycombe and then to Grae Laws about Beyond Touch.  Grae’s work with Beyond Touch has led him to the role of facilitating a peer network group for Buckinghamshire Business First, about which we then talk.If you’re not in Bucks (but are in England!), don’t worry – the program is national, so if you talk to your local Growth Hub (of which Buckinghamshire Business First is just one) they’ll talk to you about your local offering. And if you want to know more about growth hubs, go back to season 3 episode 9 of this podcast to hear my conversation with Philippa Batting, MD of Buckinghamshire Business First.  Grae then addresses my questions around what peer network groups aim to achieve, what the benefits are for participants, with Ceri and Mark contributing with examples from their own very positive experiences as participants in the programme.Go to https://bbf.uk.com/business-support/peer-networks to find out more and sign up, or to https://bbf.uk.com/ for general info on Buckinghamshire Business First. For details on Grae’s Beyond Touch, go to https://www.beyondtouch.co.uk/ while Ceri’s Cerub PR can be found at https://cerubpr.co.uk/ and Mark’s The Massage Company High Wycombe has info at https://highwycombe.massagecompany.co.uk/.If you want to connect with me, to talk about the mentoring and coaching I deliver to small businesses, or if you think you'd be a good guest on the show, please do let me know.
