On September 9th, 1953, Stan Laurel and Oliver ‘Babe’ Hardy arrived on a boat direct from the USA into the small harbour town of Cobh, Ireland, ahead of another tour of the theatres of Great Britain. The boys assumed that they would quietly disembark unnoticed by the townspeople - but that couldn’t be further from what happened. In this special bonus episode of the podcast, Patrick welcomes filmmakers Andy Hollingworth and Matt Holt to discuss the genesis and production of their new documentary, The Last Dance of the Cuckoos, which charts this remarkable and emotive true story. In addition, Patrick invites his guests to share their earliest memories of Laurel and Hardy and also makes them face the Atoll Question. 31. Big Business (1929) [Part Two] with Richard W. Bann

31. Big Business (1929) [Part Two] with Richard W. Bann
Episode 31 completes our deep dive into Stan and Babe's 1929 masterpiece, Big Business. On the previous show, Episode 30, Randy Skretvedt and I discussed the film and also covered the mythology surrounding a couple of famous (or infamous) legends connected to the production - primarily Hal Roach's much-related tale that the wrong house was destroyed in error. Randy sided with Stan Laurel and thought that Hal's story was "a load of baloney". So, in this episode, I'm delighted to welcome back film historian and expert on the Hal Roach Studios, Richard W. Bann. Richard covers some little-known facts about Big Business, as well as laying out all the facts surrounding the 'wrong house' story. With both sides at our disposal, can we finally put this argument to bed once and for all? The big business in hand, though, is the first part of a two-episode deep dive into Laurel and Hardy's silent masterpiece, Big Business. Patrick discusses the film with regular guest expert Randy Skretvedt, and together they explore the contentious legends surrounding the film's production, such as: were the boys selling Christmas trees in the summertime, and did they trash the wrong house by mistake?? Bonus 4: "Everything Comes From Karno" with David Crump
Joining us on this special bonus edition of The Laurel & Hardy Podcast is a man who has had a number of guises in his life, including as an actor, singer, and playwright, and to that list, he can now add the title author. In 2021, he published an extensive biography of music hall impresario, Fred Karno, entitled Fred Karno: The Legend Behind the Laughter. No discussion of Stan Laurel, Laurel and Hardy – or comedy in its wider sense can be complete without recognising the impact of Fred Karno, and so it is with great pleasure that we welcome on to Episode 23, author, David Crump. On the show, Patrick chats to David about his own background before discussing the life and career of Fred Karno, with a specific focus on Karno’s involvement with Stan Laurel and later, about his brief spell working at the Hal Roach Studios. As part of the show, we also hear a couple of extracts from two interviews with Stan Laurel, held in the late 1950s, in which Stan talks about joining the Karno troupe and his tour of the vaudeville circuits of the USA. Episode 23 also sees the welcome return of the infamous ‘Atoll Question – but which items will David choose to with him onto his desert island? The interviews sampled in this episode are: 1) Stan Laurel interviewed by Arthur B. Freidman in 1957 2) Stan Laurel interviewed by Tony Thomas in 1959 To purchase a copy of Fred Karno: The Legend Behind the Laughter, by David Crump, use my affiliate link here: https://amzn.to/3aeW10h To join the ‘Blog-Heads’ Facebook Community, click here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2920310948018755 For more information about The Laurel & Hardy Blog, click here: https://laurel-and-hardy-blog.com/ To purchase CDs of the Beau Hunks Orchestra's music contained in these podcasts, click here: https://amzn.to/2CgeCbK
