Our Editor's Take

The Geraint Thomas Cycling Club podcast wishes to create a community. Host Geraint Thomas states that cycling clubs have always positively impacted his life and career. With his podcast, he wants to take that concept globally. Anyone who loves cycling can be part of it, with no minimum speed requirements. If they decide to listen to the show, they are in. It's as simple as that.

The Geraint Thomas Cycling Club might have one man in the title, but it's a two-person show. First, there's the 2018 Tour de France winner himself. Thomas has had a successful cycling career spanning 12 years. He won six world cups, two world championships, and two Olympic gold medals. He uses the podcast to help amateurs improve their skills and let them into the world of elite cycling. Tom Fordyce, his cohost and sports journalist, is a great companion to help with that mission.

Fordyce is one of those hobby-driven cyclists. As such, he acts as the podcast listeners' voice, asking what they might want to know to improve. But Fordyce is also an award-winning author and sports journalist. More than that, he collaborated with Thomas to write The World of Cycling According to G and two other books. So he's already equipped with insider knowledge of the cycling industry.

There is no shortage of star power in The Geraint Thomas Cycling Club. Thomas often invites his colleagues to talk about their successes and failures. For example, Australian bicycler Richie Porte makes a guest appearance in an episode about climbing. In another instance, Rohan Dennis, another Aussie, explains the intricacies of time-trialing. During the season, Thomas records himself from the road, along with other pro cyclists. He talks about his training, injuries, and massage therapies. He also talks about the action in the Tour de France and other events. This podcast provides valuable insight for those who will never race as professionals. New episodes come out on a periodic basis, depending upon what is happening in the cycling world.

Greatest trail runner of all time Kilian Jornet on climbing Mount Everest in 17 hours, riding up Angliru, and tackling the toughest mountains on earth
This week's guest is one of the most remarkable we've ever welcomed to the GTCC. We are used to having guests who climb mountains - and, of course, G does it almost every day - but, well, not like this guy. Kilian Jornet is one of the most incredible athletes to ever walk this earth. Aged 24, he'd won basically every ultra endurance and trail race there is to win. Since then, he's secured his status as the greatest trail runner of all time by climbing and descending numerous major mountains in scarcely believable times. Most notably, he climbed Mount Everest twice in five days back in 2017. Completely alone and without supplementary oxygen or climbing ropes, Kilian tackled the world's highest peak and returned to Base Camp in 17 hours. And yes, you read that correctly. He did it twice in five days. He's also a huge cycling fan and loved chatting to G. We're sure you're going to enjoy this week's pod. Meanwhile, G's back up a mountain of his own - he's spending a couple of weeks in Sierra Nevada before racing Strade Bianche, off the back of the Volta ao Algarve, where he made his debut for the year. Tom got the lowdown from him. We've welcomed a new partner to the GTCC!
