Kurt Toenjes Ph.D., is the Dean of the College of Health Professions and Science at Montana State University Billings. During the COVID-19 pandemic he played a key role in MSUB’s response, serving as the deputy incident commander for the COVID-19 response team providing a science-based perspective to the university’s decision making. Dr. Toenjes was also a key player in obtaining the funding for the Yellowstone Science and Health Building from the Montana Legislature as well as raising the additional $5 million in match funds. He led the MSUB subject matter experts through the programing and design process and then led the MSUB team of owner representatives during the last year of the construction process. Dr. Toenjes also serves on several statewide advisory boards and participates in initiatives related to healthcare education at the state level. He previously served as the Acting Dean of the College of Education, the Biological and Physical Sciences Department Chair, and the Vice President of the MSUB Faculty Association. He efforts at MSU Billings has been recognized for several awards including Faculty Excellence in 2013, Winston & Helen Cox Fellowship in 2010, Science Mentor of the Year in 2009, and Walter & Charlotte Pippenger Excellence in Innovation Award in 2008. Dr. Toenjes shares stories from his leadership journey and highlights some important lessons he’s learned that have helped him become a leader to entire college.

I was honored to have Dr. David Park on the show. We covered his leadership journey starting with immigrating to the U.S. as a small child and navigating and overcoming multiple challenges in medicine and education. We also dive deep into diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, and how it pertains to building strong communities. Dr. Park is the Vice President and Founding Dean of Rocky Mountain Vista University—Montana College of Osteopathic Medicine. Before relocating to Montana, Dr. Park led the development of the RVUCOM Southern Utah campus, where he served as the Vice President and Campus Dean. Prior to joining RVU, he served in various medical education leadership roles in Las Vegas, including department chair, residency program director, and assistant dean of graduate medical education. Dr. Park has been recognized nationally for his commitment to osteopathic medical education through numerous awards, including the American Osteopathic Foundation Educator of the Year Award in 2020. Dr. Park also earned the distinguished fellowship award from the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians and was elected as the 2023 President of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, which is the largest specialty organization in the osteopathic profession. He and his wife were born in South Korea and met in New York during college. They have two adult children who plan to attend medical school in the near future.
