Our Editor's Take

The Coffee Break French podcast is helpful or intermediate French speakers hoping to improve their French. Hosts Mark and Max help listeners understand French grammar and expand their vocabulary. The idea of each episode is to provide listeners with a language lesson, "one coffee break at a time." In this way, it's more manageable for people to fit learning a language into their busy day.

Coffee Break Languages provides courses and articles to teach Swedish, Chinese, and more. Founder Mark Pentleton taught languages in Scottish secondary school education. After the success of his Coffee Break Spanish course, which Mark created in 2006, he decided to branch out. Mark developed new learning options across languages with his Radio Lingua Ltd company.

Joining Mark on this podcast is native French speaker Max. He teaches French as a foreign language and develops the curriculum for the podcast. Each episode explores a different grammar rule, pronunciation example, or vocabulary guide. The hosts teach in a mixture of French and English. As they translate from one to the other, each lesson is easy for listeners to learn and understand.

One episode examines when to use adjectives before nouns in a sentence. In English, it's common for adjectives to go before a noun, such as "the beautiful house." In French, this is usually the other way round, such as "un livre intéressant." Yet, a few exceptions to this rule in French exist, which they group into different categories.

Max uses the word "BANGS" to remember the categories. He then talks through each one, starting with "Beauty." Max then provides examples of adjectives that fit under that category. It's an easy-to-follow lesson with valuable examples that make it easy to remember.

Another episode helps with the pronunciation of "u" and "ou." The hosts share plenty of examples so listeners can practice for themselves. Max also reminds listeners to consider "silent letters" as part of the pronunciation.

The Coffee Break French podcast is a language-learning series for intermediate speakers. Each episode shares a new lesson, helping with grammar and pronunciation. New episodes premiere each week.
