Candlelit Tales Irish Mythology Podcast

This month we are celebrating the Goddess Brigid and her feast day of Imbolc by releasing a month filled with Goddess stories. This episode is the post show chat about the previous, pretty dark tale. Trigger warning, this story contains subject matter of abuse and even psychological torture… but then most good myths have something pretty dark just under the surface. We chat about how much better a story is when you shine light on the full aspect. Aron told the story of Fionn meeting Sadhbh way back in episode 14 but, this time Sorcha tells a reimagining of the story from Sadhbh’s perspective. In the Fianna Fionn Mac Coole was the great leader, but there is an old Irish proverb that says “a man is a man when his woman is a woman”. And though we usually know the story of Sadhbh from Fionn’s perspective, this cuts out an entire chunk of the action. Sorcha delves deeper into the mind of a woman tormented by an evil druid, unable to take no for an answer. Cruelly cursed, her only reprieve is the short lived love she finds with Fionn, which leaves her pregnant. But all too soon she is whisked away to the other world, and her torment resumes. She gave birth to Oísin - but that is all we know of her. Is she still in the otherworld? Did she ever get away from her tormentor? How can someone sustain themselves living like that?
