H. Jon Benjamin on Bad Jazz, Unproduced Jazz Daredevil Films, and Crying In the Mirror
H. Jon Benjamin joins Kyle Meredith to talk about his latest turn as The Jazz Daredevil. On this third outing, the (overly confident while being absent of any confidence) character takes center stage in The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack of the (Unproduced) Film… The Jazz Daredevil, which just as it sounds, is a soundtrack to a movie that hasn’t been made yet. But unlike his first two albums of instrumentals, this record also features dialogue of what would be the film, if the film were to have actually been made. But not all of the dialog, so there’s plenty of mystery for all of us to figure out. Benjamin, known as the voice to the title characters in both Bob’s Burgers and Archer, tells us how the script and concept came to be, how he conceived the character after a Bob’s Burgers live show, and the blind confidence and pride that keeps our hero recording and releasing despite the fact that he can’t really play piano. The comedian also reveals some of the inspiration they took from Bernard Herman’s Vertigo score, getting his Home Movies buddy Brenden Smalls involved for a metal song, and recording the noises for the sex scene. He also considers if there is more of this story still to come, before looking back on his work in Masters of None, and previews the upcoming Familiar Touch, which finds him taking on drama - and crying.Listen to H. Akon on 20 Years of Trouble, a Superfan Festival, and His Next Album
Akon joins Kyle Meredith to talk about the 20th anniversary of his debut album, Trouble. The "Lonely" singer also previews his upcoming LP, so listen to the episode now.Akon takes us back to his 2004 mindset, in which his then-recent release from jail made up the bulk of inspiration for the songs on the record. He talks about breaking out of that persona after becoming so well known for it, as well as how he was musically looking towards Michael Jackson and Bob Marley. He also dives into the story of how he landed on the sped up Bobby Vinton sample in "Lonely," and helping popularize auto-tune with T-Pain.Elsewhere, Akon teases his upcoming album, noting that some of the new material arrives as a counterpoint to his lack of interest in the messages of today’s music scene. "I have to come back, only because the direction of where music is going I don't think is helpful," he says. "I just believe that it's a lot of misguidance, misinformation. I think that the direction of where we're steering kids at with music today is not helpful."Listen to Akon chat about all this and more in the new episode or watch it on YouTube.
